SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Nestle's U.S. baking division said on Friday that it was voluntarily recalling its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned of the risk of contamination with E. coli bacteria.

Nestle said the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were investigating reports of illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 in consumers who also reported having eaten raw cookie dough. E. coli can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrhea, the FDA said.

Since March, the FDA said, there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states. Twenty-five people were hospitalized, according to the FDA, and no one has died.

"We want to strongly advise consumers that raw cookie dough should not be eaten," Nestle said in a statement. "This message also appears prominently on our packaging."

15. I do!!!
For some, it's an acquired taste, but raw cookie dough is damned tasty.

Though the best raw cookie dough isn't the stuff in the tubes from the grocery store, but the stuff you make yourself. Bake most of it into tasty cookies, but some of the dough's gonna disappear in the process...

6. It has eggs in it. Eating eggs raw is always a bad idea...
Raw cookie dough is still tasty though!

14. It's not allowed to be raw by law.

Legally, when using anymore than three eggs you must use pasteurized eggs. i've used them all the time in baking.

The main problem there with eggs is salmonella, not e.coli. And these eggs have all been pasteurized.

I'm suspecting that something in their manufacturing line is at fault. Or another unsuspected ingredient is found to be contaminated.

On edit: In the race to the bottom of the corporate food industry this is the sort of stuff that starts happening. For example, as a cook I have all sorts of reasons to not eat at Olive Garden. One of the main reasons being that the one local to me in the nineties was constantly being shut down for salmonella and e.coli. What it told me is that they were paying starvation wages to people. The employees weren't being paid enough to give a shit, and the cleanliness of the kitchen environs was suffering as a result. I believe the contaminations were traced back to a particular Hobart mixer that apparently was never properly maintained.

10. I grew up on cookie dough
My mother started making two batches because we would eat it before she could get the cookies baked.

We loved the cookies after they were baked equally.

11. My mom was a quick hand with a wooden spoon
to the back of our hands if we tried swiping the raw cookie dough. Smack!

We quickly learned to wait until the cookies came out of the oven. I never learned, though, to let the cookies cool long enough, and had the mouth blisters to prove it. :bounce:

12. in college....
we'd whip up a double batch of Toll House cookies....

grap 6 spoons and eat is right out of the bowl.

The cooking thing spoils the flavor, IHMO.

13. OK.
All commercial products are made with pastuerized eggs. You can eat the shit raw to your heart's content.

This is done to prevent salmonella. E.coli is another monster altogether, and I would look at ALL the ingredients closely.

The 'raw' stuff in ice cream should be OK, just like the stuff that Toll House produces. None of it is really raw. The contamination probably lies somewhere in their manufacturing.

Don't eat their shit, make your own or patronize your local baker when you want a cookie. Check out their ingredients list. It's not just flour, sugar, chocolate, etc; it's chemistry.
