When I first signed up on DU, I was always squabbling with people who seemed to my left.

Now I seem to be squabbling with people to my right. Often way to my right.

What gives? I don't think my fundamental views have changed. I used to think I was only slightly left of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY's center. Now it seems I am a left wing kook.

believing in things like Rule of Law, Justice, treaties, no torture, investigations/prosecutions , government oversight, universal healthcare, transparency, civil rights for all, which we all commiserated about during the Bush years and took solace from each other. In other words, I was anything BUT radical - I was the norm.

Now, however I am told my very same beliefs are impractical, immoderate, demanding, purist, impatient, undermining, intolerant, leftist, Naderish, bashing, etc.

I didn't change, the tenor and tone of the site has. Most seem to be grateful for the few crumbs that are scattered our way from our now-in-power-yet-still-impotent Dems. We are told that if we are very very patient, yet more crumbs may be tossed at us all in good time. Now, let's look at another picture of Bo and stop fretting about healthcare.

19. My observation is that many people confuse "issues" with "politics".

If one wants to be an ideological purist, democratic (small 'd') politics isn't going to be a very rewarding experience. Compromise is part of the plan, and leaders are supposed to try to represent all of their constituents, not an extremist platform.

There are plenty of ways in which one can get involved to try to influence political policy, but failure to adhere to a full and complete purist agenda should not make a legislator/candidate an enemy. John Lewis is my Rep, and there are things that we disagree on, but overall he is still the best Rep I could possibly hope for.

But, we all have to decide when a leader has strayed from the path enough to lose our support.
With issues, the goal rarely changes. You just keep fighting to get there. With politicians, it's not a choice between Candidate (D) and "Perfection", it's between the D and somebody else.
