Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers has received a pre-indictment letter from
federal authorities who have given her until the end of today to reach a plea deal, or they will proceed with possible criminal charges against her, the Free Press has learned.
Prosecutors are pursuing evidence stemming from a $1.2-billion deal the City of Detroit made with Synagro Technologies in 2007. Conyers, who initially opposed the deal, switched positions and cast the deciding vote on the council.
Authorities also are looking into investments by Detroit’s public pension funds. Conyers is a former trustee on the city’s general retirement pension fund.
Several people familiar with aspects of the offer spoke with the Free Press but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of ongoing negotiations. Two people said Conyers has until the end of today to decide. It does not appear at this point that Conyers has cut the deal.

Sources: Monica Conyers considers plea deal in City Hall corruption case
Leonard N. Fleming, Paul Egan and Darren A. Nichols / The Detroit News
Detroit --Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers has been offered a plea deal by the federal government in connection with a corruption investigation at City Hall, four sources with knowledge of the deal confirmed.
The federal authorities have told Conyers they want an answer by the end of today, but the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers hasn't made up her mind, sources said. The bribery-related charge that Conyers could plead to carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, although she probably would receive less time.
Two sources who have spoken with Conyers said she is reluctant because she doesn't want to serve time in jail.
Steve Fishman, Conyers' attorney, declined to comment.
