Parking tickets - in their own driveways
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 02:28 PM by LaurenG
TOLEDO — Residents of Toledo are complaining that they received $25 tickets for parking their vehicles in their own driveways.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways.

During a news conference Monday, Finkbeiner ignored a reporter's question of whether the crackdown and fines were related to the city's budget crisis.

The three-term mayor faces a recall vote in November. Critics have claimed he's wasted city money.

3. I got one of these once, 12 years ago, at my home in South California . . .
Wasn't even a citation from the police. The "City Beautification Commission" issued it, early one evening, because my one of my cars was parked on a thin strip of grass next to the one-car driveway.

I protested it, pointed out I only parked there because my car had been vandalized twice and stolen once while parked in the street in front of the home, so I thought being on the property might be safer. Told 'em, if they had better guarantees on the safety of the community, then "beautification" might follow naturally. Pointed out a host of other "beautification" issues in the neighborhood, any one of which was more egregious than my car and none of which I was willing to see ticketed.

The capper (I'm sure) was when I pointed out the "Commission" knocked on the door of a neighbor a few doors down from me and gave him the opportunity to move his vehicle, but did not extend the same courtesy to me.

The upshot of it all, the ticket was rescinded, but only if I promised to not park on the grass anymore. A week or two later, I paved the whole section and have parked there ever since. Bastards.

4. lol, kinda makes me glad that i dont have any neighbourhood nazis
and the signs do warn trespassers will be shot helps also, i dont understand how people would live anywhere were their neighbours can force them to do certain stuff on their own property, each to his own though.

9. i do but only in an official capacity, you have no idea of the number of
calls we get involving neighbours at each others throats or some idiot wanting us to enforce a homeowners ordinance.

5. I like what councilman Collins said in The Blade article:
"I would hope the city would realize this was an exercise in insanity and rescind the tickets," Mr. Collins said. "Those who work for the mayor, it is like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, where those who are all insane flock together."

6. Well, after all, he does want the water to run off paved driveways.
He just can't stand the thought of water sinking into the earth through gravel driveways.
