House Republican leaders are bracing for criticism of what they expect will be near unanimous opposition among their members when the House votes Tuesday on a $106 billion war supplemental spending bill.
“There’s nobody in America that can doubt that I have a lot of support for our troops,” said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner .
“I have a lot of support for them and so do my colleagues day in and day out. This is not about whether we’re going to support our troops; this is about asking our troops to put on their backs a $110 billion global bailout,” Boehner said, referring to money in the bill that is intended to support the International Monetary Fund.
The Ohio Republican, who expressed concern that the bill does not block the possible release of controversial detainee photos, said “a no vote is the way to go” for anyone “serious about protecting our troops.”
Democrats are sure to criticize the House Republicans for voting against the measure, which includes $79.9 billion for military funding, $5 billion in new borrowing for the International Monetary Fund and $7.7 billion for flu pandemic preparations.
Republican leaders are predicting near-unanimity in opposition, but they don’t know what John M. McHugh of New York will do. President Obama has nominated the New York Republican to become Army secretary.
