The Democratic Party is a joke...
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 01:07 PM by Bread and Circus
First they tell me this:

No, you aren't getting single payer and you might not even get a public health insurance option that matters either.

Then they pretend to be "Barack Obama" and send me this:

From: President Barack Obama <info@barackobama.com>

Henry --

Last year, millions of Americans came together for a great purpose.

Folks like you assembled a grassroots movement that shocked the political establishment and changed the course of our nation. When Washington insiders counted us out, we put it all on the line and changed our democracy from the bottom up. But that's not why we did it.

The pundits told us it was impossible -- that the donations working people could afford and the hours volunteers could give would never loosen the vise grip of big money and powerful special interests. We proved them wrong. But as important as that was, that's not why we did it.

Today, spiraling health care costs are pushing our families and businesses to the brink of ruin, while millions of Americans go without the care they desperately need. Fixing this broken system will be enormously difficult. But we can succeed. The chance to make fundamental change like this in people's daily lives -- that is why we did it.

The campaign to pass real health care reform in 2009 is the biggest test of our movement since the election. Once again, victory is far from certain. Our opposition will be fierce, and they have been down this road before. To prevail, we must once more build a coast-to-coast operation ready to knock on doors, deploy volunteers, get out the facts, and show the world how real change happens in America.

And just like before, I cannot do it without your support.

So I'm asking you to remember all that you gave over the last two years to get us here -- all the time, resources, and faith you invested as a down payment to earn us our place at this crossroads in history. All that you've done has led up to this -- and whether or not our country takes the next crucial step depends on what you do right now.

Will you donate whatever you can afford to support the campaign for real health care reform in 2009?

It doesn't matter how much you can give, as long as you give what you can. Millions of families on the brink are counting on us to do just that. I know we can deliver.

Thank you, so much, for getting us this far. And thank you for standing up once again to take us the rest of the way.

Sincerely,

President Barack Obama

Which is footnoted thusly:

Paid for by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee -- 430 South Capitol Street SE, Washington, D.C. 20003. This communication is not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee. Monetary contributions to the Democratic National Committee are not tax-deductible.

=================================================================================

What a bunch of trash. Basically, they are asking me to donate more money to their organization to "fight the good fight" when they aren't even fighting hard for what a majority of Americans, nurses, and physicians actually want.

Fuck them.

Please change this to small d democratic Underground, please.

4. The party can move wayy to the right, and yet it's still golden
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 01:11 PM by RufusTFirefly
That is, as long as it's still called the Democratic Party.

That's the beauty of it.

Progressives in the Democratic Party still speak for me. But otherwise I consider the party to be a burned-out, hollowed-out tenement that has been occupied by 1960s-era Republican squatters.

IBTL

P.S. Welcome to the Greatest Page.

5. Then the DSCC sends me this garbage....
Dear Friend,

Don't believe what you've heard about a GOP in disarray. They're mad, they're organized, and they're determined to return to what they see as their rightful place: ruling the halls of Congress.

How do I know? $14.4 million.

That's how much Newt Gingrich raised during a fundraising dinner last week for Republican House and Senate committees. One speech. $14.4 million.

They not only have cash, but also history on their side. There are only a handful of times in our nation's past when the party that won the White House hasn't lost big the following midterm election. That would spell disaster for President Obama's agenda.

That's why the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee needs your help. Our June 30 fundraising deadline is fast approaching. We have a big goal, and just 15 days left and $297,451 to make it. If you give now, a team of Democratic senators will automatically match your gift two-to-one, effectively tripling your donation. In addition, if you contribute $5 or more, you will receive a free "Change Starts With Me" car magnet.

Click here to make a contribution of $5 or more today.

It's crucial that we meet our fundraising goal. Why? First: The early money and momentum we built was instrumental in defending each of our Democratic senators and turning 14 seats in the past four years from red to blue. Not meeting each and every fundraising goal could mean losing our advantage - and with Barack Obama in the White House, our best chance in years to move America forward. It's that simple.

Second: The Republicans are more organized than they've been in the past. Their fundraising machine, fed by fear tactics and smear campaigns from Newt, Rush Limbaugh and friends, is humming along. We can't let them get ahead of us.

Third: In his speech last week, Newt said President Obama has already failed. We know that's ridiculous - but the best way to prove it is to defend our Senate majority. We don't have enough votes to keep Republicans from blocking President Obama's agenda and Supreme Court nominees. The loss of even one seat will make it that much harder to stop their stonewalling and stalling.

Do your part to defend progress. The match provided by Democratic senators means that your contribution before June 30 of $5 will be tripled to $15, and $20 will become $60. And as a token of our appreciation for gifts of $5 or more, you'll receive a "Change Starts With Me" car magnet. There are only 15 days left to meet our goal, so please give today. The Republicans aren't waiting, and neither can we.

You and I both know that the GOP talking heads are going to be scrutinizing our fundraising totals. If we fall short of our goal, they'll say the American honeymoon with President Obama is over. They'll say America's ready for a change: back to Republican rule.

We can't let that happen. Our country can't afford to let that happen. It's time to prove that we meant the strong message we sent in November.
Sincerely,

J.B. Poersch

7. If they send a self-addressed envelope with it SEND IT BACK to them without money!
and instead put in a message there why you don't donate to their fund in it, and why you are donating the money instead to other progressive organizations that do listen to your concerns instead of they who don't seem to be listening to them.

Make them PAY for their BS (the postage that gets paid for your message being sent to them).

I recall some donation letters asking for people to put stamps on their donation letters to help offset the costs of their letter campaigns. I'll bet more likely it is to cover the cost of many of us sending back letters with no donations included, and showing up as increasing costs that they have to explain to others. If some people pay for the postage on the donations they send, it serves to cover up more for those that send back the envelopes with messages instead of donations.

In other words, the fact that they do send these solicitations to put your own postage on these donation letters you send back shows to me that this sort of thing works, and if more of us did it, I think would perhaps drive the point home sooner that they are representing corporate interests at the expense of supporting people, who reject them more and more each day.

8. I agree
That's why I'm an liberal Independent and have been for 20 years. The DNC has to become more progressive in order to get me back. I live in the reddest of red states and am from the south so understand that the democrats have to be more concevative in order to be elected. Having said that, this has nothing to do with having the guts to stand up to the radical republicans.

Honestly I can't imagine what sort of average democrat would be doing giving money to the DLC.

Lets see:
Labor Unions- nope
Teachers- Nope
Minority or civil liberty groups- nope.
Economic progressives-nope

The only reason for the DLC is to give corporations a stronger voice in the democratic party and to water us down to the point where Democratic VOTERS (which is what it is supposed to be about) are the ones being left out of the system.

But yeah, definitely flamebait.

I worked damn hard turning people into voters for President Obama.
The least you can do is Stand up and fight for what is right.
like SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE FOR ALL!!!
Caving into the insurance lobby is exactly what I feared.
caving into the banking industry has already happened.
not one damn penny until President Obama grows a pair, utilizes his bully pulpit and removes profit from Health care in this country.
Anything less is nothing but pandering to those who would keep America the backwater the republicans try to maintain.

I read about 1/2 of it and said Oh boy... Sure... I'll donate (NOT) WTF? :wtf: --- Prices for everything, when combined, are surpassing what we make - the credit card companies went nuts and raised our rates even though we pay on time. Everyone got a bail out except for those of us way down here on the bottom of the pile.... Sure Obama, I'll dig into my bottomless pit of money and donate to the people who are pretty much pissing me off.

(Oh.. and please, I do not need a lecture on what a terrific guy the POTUS is. I am not angry about some imaginary pony gifting. I would like to see my gay brother in law be treated equally when he visits with his husband and not be told to sit in the back of the fucking bus. I would like the Democrats to push for single payer health care. I would like to se DADT repealed. I would like to see the Patriot Act flushed down the toilet.)

So anyway... I think I will remove my name from the mailing list because I find it insulting to get the self serving emails trying to justify a big pile of shit.

25. my reply (and you guys amaze me)
as much as I would like to be able to donate at this current time, the economic picture for my family remains very weak. The thought of possibly losing my job and not being able to afford health insurance, or god forbid healthcare, keeps me awake at night. I worry about losing the home I've lived in for over thirty years due to the same reasons. But, I voted for change, I voted for hope, and what have I gotten? The same old thing that has been given to the working class for years, promises that amount to nothing.

Until I see real change in the elected representatives of the Democratic Party, as soon as I see the spineless congresspeople stand up to the Republicans on the War, Healthcare, jobs, education and myriad other subjects, then I will consider sending you a donation.

In the meantime, tell the President, I am one of those that feels let down in so many ways from his lofty campaign speeches.

Cordially,

BTW: I did not expect miracles, I expected a President that ran the Democratic Party with power to bring about change. not what I'm seeing in all venues.

As a senator he was for universal healthcare, it is possible if you say you were for it as a senator and then campaign on hope and change, that maybe the people that supported you might be expecting some kind of actual public program somewhere rather than corporate wealth-fare?

44. No I am asking for an actual link to where he said in his Presidential campaign
that he wanted single payer.

People talk about it as if he mentioned it daily. There must be a link then. Unless you are projecting and just wanted him to say it, but he really did not?

53. So...
We are to ignore his record as a senator and believe that 'change' merely means corporate wealthfare to the insurance industry?

Honestly this really isn't much of a defence for failing to do the right and most just (as well as the most efficient) thing.

Perhaps we should use these kinds of penny-sucking technicalities for everything we voted for him to accomplish.

65. Full quote from Obama in 2003:

“I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care program.” (applause) “I see no reason why the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the history of the world, spending 14 percent of its Gross National Product on health care cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. And that’s what Jim is talking about when he says everybody in, nobody out. A single payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that’s what I’d like to see. But as all of you know, we may not get there immediately. Because first we have to take back the White House, we have to take back the Senate, and we have to take back the House.”

Obama speaking to the Illinois AFL-CIO, June 30, 2003.

He sold his soul someplace along the line...

Well, things are a bit different now.

I also don't expect him to change things instantly. You may call it being a Koolaid drinker, I call it not living in La-La Land.

50. Would you like a link to where he said all ideas would be considered? He kicked
single payer off the table without looking at it, yet he's willing to consider mandates which he ran against in his campaign.

He's afraid to debate single payer because it would make him look like the corporate lackey he is.

70. On the table
does not mean "We are going with this plan".

It means it will be considered. Even if only for 3 seconds. it does not guarantee serious consideration. It does not mean a committee to look into it. It means its a consideration, in every possible interpretation of the word.

71. 3 seconds eh? My guess is Obama doesn't know what it is then, because it would take longer than that
to understand the concept.

I bet you are pretty glad that the insurance industry got months to present their case, though.

32. If your not willing to work from inside the party structure
to shape policy you should go. Start your own party, start your own website and leave us fucks to muddle along in the real world. Look I am as cynical as anybody about healthcare reform. I don't think our Senators have any intention of doing anything. It disappoints the hell out of me. I also think the two party system isn't going anywhere any time soon and there is no national party that could be formed by people that only share my decidedly "far left" views that could expect to garner a majority nationwide. Given that reality, you must either help the Democratic Party or abandon it and by default put the conservative party in power. It's a choice of one or the other. That's reality. That's what "fuck them" gets you- far right rule yet again. If anything we need to work harder, become more involved in the party at all levels. Throwing up your hands will give you the opposite of what you want.

We might not get a public option if you just wanna bash Democrats.

When did Obama ever run on single payer? Did your Democratic congresscritter run on single payer? Mine didn't, and she lost handily anyway.

I think the Republican who defeated her is much more of a joke.

Except that jokes are supposed to be funny.

The emails I have gotten from Obama say that Obama is pushing for a public option. Is THAT a joke? Is that what you want to say "fu%& you" to?
