They have come out against a single-payer health care system, otherwise known as universal health care which exists in every industrialized country in the world except here. And they also booed Obama at their convention when he stated that he was against a cap on amounts paid in medical lawsuits.
This is not a screed against doctors. But it is a screed against the organization that (supposedly) represents them, the AMA. It’s an organization that I’m virtually certain that most doctors who care about their patients hate. And it’s also an organization that somewhere along the way forgot the statement “First, do no harm”.
From all of Western Europe, to Canada, to Japan, universal health care is working out just fine. (And for you die-hard unregulated capitalism fanatics out there, universal health care makes it cheaper for the Japanese and Europeans to build cars as they don’t have to include the health care of their employees into their costs.)
And as far as caps on medical law suits, what if you have two legs, one needs to be cut off, and the doctor/hospital is responsible for cutting off the wrong one? What price would you put on that? Why should there be a cap on how much you can sue for?
Like most of you, I like my doctor. He drives a Lexus, travels the world and has no problem with the concept of universal health care. He has spent time in Africa doing work for Doctors Without Borders, and he cuts every corner possible to save his patients from having to pay for things they don’t need. And he also thinks that the AMA is owned and controlled by relics from the Stone Age.
The next time you see your doctor, ask him/her their opinion of the AMA. And you might also want to throw in a question about that “First, do no harm” thing.
