Josh is dead. I buried him in the backyard this afternoon.
He was 8 weeks old when he came into my life. A great big ball of golden retriever fluff, nothing but fur and needle-sharp puppy teeth. He may have been the dumbest dog ever to walk this earth; jumping through the SAME screen door three times, and never quite figuring out that no matter how ferociously he barked, the mailman was going to persist in coming to our house 6 days a week.
I held him as the vet administered the shot. He looked me in the eye and licked my face, accepting the needle like he accepted everything else in life, with a look of benign befuddlement. God, I hope he didn't feel betrayed. Cancer and a bad hip had left him in chronic pain, and I probably allowed him to suffer for too long, but I know he forgives me ... he always did, and his love was unconditional.
Just a dog ... a big old dumb ass of a dog ... and I can't stop crying.

4. Do you know about the rainbow bridge?
Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I was allowed to "see" my beloved Sandy cross the bridge. She adopted us, and spent her days with my parents while I worked and my daughter was at school. She adored my parents and gave their last years many laughs and blessings. She died a few years after they had passed. I was with her when she died, and closed my eyes intending to say a prayer of thanksgiving that she had been a part of our life. As soon as I closed my eyes, I could see her bounding away across a field of flowers, and as she went out of sight, I could hear my parents' laughter. An incredible experience. I had not heard of the rainbow bridge until after that, but when I learned of it, I knew that I had seen her cross the bridge to my parents.

189. I had to do the same thing to my dog Korky.
It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I held him and felt the life go out of him. I felt guilty for years. I know I did the "right thing" but that wasn't much of a consolation at the time. I swore I"d never get another dog and have to go through that again for years.

Then my kids started growing up and I felt bad they had never had the experience of having a dog in the family. So when my sisters Lab gave birth the second time we took a Black pup home with us.

Buddy is now an established member of our family and the most spoiled Lab for miles around. I can't imagine a better family addition. So what I am saying is maybe go out and try again. It was the best decision I've ever made.

Condolences.

We honor his valuable life and his unique spirit.

We lost my cat of 21 years a few months back. I have lost four over the last few decades.

Please, after you have honored him, adopt another pet as soon as possible. We have two adult cats AND a newly adopted kitten. She has helped us heal SO much.

Been there, done that more times than I care to count -- but with cats, not dogs. It's hard, but I've been glad I was there during the process before there's something comforting about watching how an animal eases peacefully into that long sleep.

29. So sorry for your loss, I am still in mourning over my pet.
This has been posted before, but in case you haven't seen it, here it is for you my friend.

The Rainbow Bridge
There is a bridge connecting Heaven & Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of
meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again. Those who
are maimed are made whole. They play together all day.
There is only one thing missing: They are not with
their special person who loved them on Earth.
Each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring!
And this one suddenly runs from the group.
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet,
you take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once
more into the eyes of your trusting friend.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together,
never again to be separated.

Sorry I don't know who the author is.

I work with the blind staff people at Oregon Public Broadcasting. Some of the most beloved assistance dogs are mixes of Golden Retrievers and yellow Labrador Retrievers. I just love the breeds, but we travel too much to ever have another dog.

There's one particularly beautiful retriever we saw in Maui, Hawaii. Mahina was the lightest blond I've ever seen -- almost like moonlight (that's what his name means)!

and you returned that love with easing his pain... Please don't feel guilty for that. I feel your own pain, as does every DUer who has ever truly loved a pet. I wish I could take it away (and that I would not again feel that wrenching pain when my own doggie girl eventually leaves me), but I will never regret for a minute the joy of having had my pets. I know you don't either.

52. I'm so so so sorry.
I'm crying here with you because I've gone through it too. It's so hard. But you did the right thing and he didn't feel betrayed at all - he knows you did it because you love him so much you couldn't be selfish and keep him here if he was so sick and in so much pain. He wasn't stupid - he knew how much you loved him and he loved you very much - screens in doors are minor details compared to that.

RIP Josh.

54. With tears in my eyes and a heavy heart, I'm so sorry for
your loss. I love my Princess so much and I know you loved your dog as much.

This was part of an email that I received recently:

"Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened."

I didn't know that until 5 years ago. I had always liked dogs, but never had I loved one. I feel my dog has indeed awakened a part of my soul.

Tribute To A Best Friend

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor....
then I remember,
it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound....
then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours....
your golden voice is still.
But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.
I'll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.

Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
--Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"

Prayer for Animal Burial
Eternal Spirit, we bring you our grief in the loss of Josh and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for who lived among us and gave us freely of his love. We commit our friend and companion Josh into your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen.

ONE MAN'S SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO A DOG

The one absolutely unselfish friend that
a man can have in this selfish world,
the one that never deserts him,
the one that never proves ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog.

A man's dog stands by him in prosperity
and in poverty,
in health and in sickness.
He will sleep on the cold ground where
the wintery winds blow,
and the snow drives fiercely,
if only he may be near his master's
side. He will kiss the hand that has no
food to offer, he will lick the sores
and wounds that come in encounter with
the roughness of the world. He guards
the sleep of his Pauper master as if he
were a prince.

When all other friends desert,
he remains.
When riches take wings and reputation
falls to pieces, he is as constant in
his love as the sun in it's journey
through the heavens.
If misfortune drives the master forth
an outcast in the world, friendless
and homeless, the faithful dog asks
no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard against
danger, to fight against his enemies.

And when the last scene of all comes,
and death takes the master in it's
embrace, and his body is laid away in
the cold ground, no matter if all other
friends pursue their way, there by the
graveside will the noble dog be found,
his head between his paws, his eyes sad,
but open in alert watchfulness,
faithful and true, even in death.

-From a speech given by
Former Senator George Graham Vest
of Missouri. Delivered in 1870 when he
was acting as a lawyer in a suit against
a man who had killed the dog of his
client. -- He won the case.

and finally from lord byron

MONUMENT TO A DOG
When some proud son of man returns to
earth, Unknown to glory, but upheld by
birth, The sculptor's art exhausts the
pomp of woe, And storied urns record who
rests below. When all is done, upon the
tomb is seen, Not what he was, but what
he should have been.
But the poor dog, in life the firmest
friend, The first to welcome, foremost
to defend, Whose honest heart is still
his master's own, Who labors, fights,
lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth
-- While man, vain insect! hopes to be
forgiven, And claims himself a sole
exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt
by power--
Who knows thee well must quit thee with
disgust, Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all
a cheat, Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy
words deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush
for shame. Ye, who perchance behold this
simple urn, Pass on--it honors none you
wish to mourn. To mark a friend's remains
these stones arise;
I never knew but one--and here he lies.
--- Lord Byron ---
Inscription on the monument of his
Newfoundland dog, 1808

i know how you feel about josh -- i loved my old boy sport more than i can ever say -- and i miss him every day.

his ashes i buried with my dad --

sport was my very heart.

you loved josh just as you should have -- and may all the blessings there are, were or ever will be fall gently on you for that --
because you already know -- we can't love them as much they love us.

57. Well shit Bravo, I know how you feel
My ol' dog is hacking and limping along at times and the thought is always there when they get too miserable can we admit that they need our help. They don't know what we know. That shot means nothing, they have had plenty, right? I think you did the honorable thing for your pet. We once had a horse that ran a race and broke a serious bone in its leg and had to be put down. Damn, we all cried. You feel guilty AND sad. It's always the one that is special.

I have bought some real beer here in Okla. that means 6. or something strong, and now drinking it, and very emotional at the moment and your story hits a spot in my heart. My own dumb dog that I have cried over several times when I thought he was dying. Crazy how we care for them isn't it? But, sounds like you did the best for him.

58. There is nothing worse than the loss of a beloved friend----
you did the right thing and gave him peace. Sometimes I thought I was doing my boys a favor by keeping them alive longer than their bodies wanted too, I was being selfish. I too held my dog Bo while he was given his shot, he looked at me with those loving eyes and I kissed him good bye.
You didnt betray your friend you gave him the greatest gift of all, freedom from pain.

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart
in all the world is more grateful for kindness
than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should
lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging
of my tail when your footstep falls on my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside...for I am now a
domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements...
and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet
beside the hearth...for you are my god, and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it were
dry.
I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well,
to romp and play and do your bidding to walk by your side,
and stand ready, willing and able to protect you
with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or
sight,
do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands
grant me
the merciful bounty of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last
breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Remember me not with tearful eyes...but instead with an abounding heart.
Should you choose to fill my bed, feel no guilt,
you have not betrayed me. Love another as you always loved me...
and they too will love you as I always have.

He was not just a dog, he was your loving friend. My husband and I have had to make the painful decision to have our beloved pets put to sleep twice. Both were elderly, and both were in pain. We held each other as we cried. They were our kids, our four legged, furry kids, and we still miss each of them. It's such a hard decision to make, I know, but letting them linger in pain is not good, and you did the right thing. Sending loving thoughts your way.

As a dog lover my heart breaks for you, I know the pain of losing your best friend. Pets give us unconditional 24/7 love, keep us warm when we're cold, lift our spirits, and make us better people.

When we laid our dog Roscoe to rest 4 yrs. ago we were inconsolable. Sometimes little things like planting a tree or garden in their memory can ease the pain.

I hope you'll open your heart to another furry friend when your ready, sometimes they're the best medicine. We did 6 mo. later and couldn't be happier. You can never replace what you lost, but you can start a new relationship.

I hope you do, you sound like a wonderful pet owner.

76. We lost our lab and golden to cancer and
when you take them to get the shot, it's so hard. All you can do is stroke them and love them and ease them over.

We always get our dogs from rescue groups and never from pet stores.

Our lab, Buddy, was THE best. He's been gone now for 4 years and we still miss him and catch ourselves calling our new lab by Buddy. Willie just looks at us like he knows why we called him Buddy.

The golden grew up with our kids...our daughter was 2 when we got Maynerd. Oue son was 11 and Maynerd knew who he could be 'rough' with and who he had to be careful with.

Labs and goldens are the absolute best breeds, altho we have 2 bichons and Silly Willie is a lab who knows what else mix with a heart of gold.

Hugs to you Bravo and my deepest sympathy on your loss. Josh will always be with you.

I worked for a vet once and on the first day, told her I wouldn't assist in putting animals to sleep. As a few day went by, it just had to happen and was part of my duty to hold them. When I saw how QUICKLY the procedure is, and vertually painless and how it stopped the suffering of so many poor animals, I also, over the years have HAD to make that sad decision, and was a least consoled by the quickness. I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend.

86. Sorrow for Josh
11 Bravo,

I couldn't stop crying when Jake, my Golden Retriever, died. He had cancer and we had to amputate one of his legs (he never knew the difference; acted like he had always had three legs). Jake was like your Josh --- just a silly, laid back way too mellow guy and just writing this is making me cry again. We actually beat the cancer but he died of a massive stroke --- I guess his body had had all it could handle. We had to take him to the emergency room at 10:00 p.m. that night and when the final word came, I laid down with him on the floor for about 30 minutes reminding him of all the great times we had during the last 11 years. I was with him when they administered the final injection --- and stayed with him for another 30 minutes after he died. Why do things have to be so hard. Even now the tears come so easily.

I now have two Golden Retrievers named Murphy (boy) and Devon (girl). They bring total joy to my life and Murphy is the biggest, goofiest guy ever and Devon is the sweet, tomboy who loves to pounce on Murphy and roll him over (go girl). I too often look at them and think of the day I will lose them but in the end the joy and love they give us helps make up for the heartbreak of losing them. Take heart and know that you are not alone in your feelings of loss and love for Josh.

Polly

I'll be going through this very soon, myself.

My 14, almost 15-year-old, cocker spaniel has oral cancer. He's already had surgery once, but the tumor is growing back. I can't keep putting through surgery at his age, so now we're just bidding time.

What sucks is that he doesn't seem like he's in pain. He's a little slower, but still friendly and chipper. The problem would be that the tumors will eventually prevent him from eating and/or breathing.

Sigh.

Pets should be required to live as long as their owners and die in the owner's arm upon their own death bed.

P.S. I also have a Golden Retriever. Still a puppy at 9 months old. She's a sweetie pie - but I'm thinking that she'll become my future daughter's dog. My daughter will be born late next month and by the time she's old enough to toddle, WooWoo will be old enough not to be so, well, rambunktious. My son has a good old mutt named Snap we got from the pound. Great dogs all.

i am so sorry for your loss..

mine had cancer as well..and now i giggle..because mine died on vacation in Vail..the vet there wanted to dispose of her..i screamed and said nooooo..never...and i had her frozen and i brought her home in a body bag and box..tied to the top of a van..and had an autopsy done with my vet when we got home..then buried her under her favorite tree ..i spent a fortune and had a head stone made..and when i sold the house, i had to make sure whoever bought the house would never remove the head stone or her..!!..it was in the sales papers!!

My husband said it reminded him of a Chevy Chase movie with the grandma..deseased.. on the roof of the car!! Family vacation or something like that...

but she was my little girl...CORKY...my best friend...

so i know how you feel...and my heart is with you...

My first guidedog was a golden.
I recently had to retire my second guide dog, he went to his puppy raiser family.

101. You're not alone.
Every time I make coffee. Every time I clink my spoon on my cereal bowl. Every time I accidentally call his name. I realize he is not here. He's been gone nearly 100 days.

But he knew I loved him.

And I know that you are the same. You loved Josh. And Josh knew it.

106. And I'm crying too
I've been there Bravo. My sweet Moonkee died on Holy Thursday (just like today) 3 years ago. I too held her as they gave the injection as she died. Oh I love that dog.

The saddest dog scene that I saw though was about 5 years ago, I was at the vet and an elderly couple came in with an elderly dog. The dog did not have long to live, but it was clear the couple was going to get all treatment possible. The man looked at me and explained, "He's our last dog." That's hard to imagine as I sit with my two dogs at my feet, my last dog.

Bless you Bravo for loving your dog so well.

They trust us to take care of them, and that means not letting them suffer unnecessarily. I visualize all my other dearly departed dogs (and cats if it's a cat) meeting them on the other side and them all running through the grass together, it makes me feel better. Perhaps it will you.

112. My husband and I got an adorable 6 week old Golden Retreiver puppy, 20 years ago.
We had been trying to get me pregnant and hadn't been successful. We decided to skip the fertility merry-go-round and, instead, get a puppy.

Little did we know at the time we got Zachary Winston Underfoot, I was pregnant.

When our daughter was born, Zach was protective of and patient with her. She had the joy of growing up with a mellow, loving, playful friend, who loved her unconditionally.

When he was 15, he took a very quick turn for the worse and we had to put him to sleep. My 14 year old daughter was utterly devasted, as was I, my husband, and many family members and friends who had come to know and love Zach, as well.

We made it only a few days before we realized we had to have another dog, although I was the most resistant. We've had Sophie for almost five years, and she is now the love of our lives. No dog could replace Zach, Sophie has just been a new chapter in the book of "Dogs We Know and Love."

117. Well, I'm just as silly, crying over a mere dog.
In my case, I sat on the floor of the vet hospital, holding my six-year-old German Shepherd in my lap, and he did the same thing -- turned his head around to give me the most meaningful look (or so it seemed to me)as the vet was administering the fatal injection. He'd been poisoned, apparently, either by some malevolent human or by the contaminated soil in the area from the six nuclear reactors at an aerospace company that had been in the area in the '60s.

He visited me in a dream, a few nights later, to let me know he was happy, and having fun with the little Lhasa/Poodle we had been forced to put to sleep (old age, sixteen years) just six months earlier.

There's no such thing as "just a dog"; they're the best people!

You won't get over it. You'll just get it in perspective after a time!

Best,

Judy

124. I am so sorry for you.
My 19-year-old cat Gabby developed a fast-moving cancer of the jaw in summer of 2005. I took her in to have her teeth cleaned, they found odd tissue, biopsied it, and within 4 weeks I had to have her put to sleep because it had gotten so bad. Like you, I probably waited longer than I should have because I loved her too much to let her go.

Her picture is the wallpaper on my computer. I still miss her, but it does get easier over time. I adopted two rescue kittens after I lost her, and they give me great joy every day. You need another companion to help your heart heal.

I hear your pain and it brought tears to my eyes. You did the right thing he had trusted you his entire life to take care of him and make his hurts go away. That's exactly what you did. Even though it ripped your heart out to do so.

I've been there before myself and I'm afraid I'm too close to being there again. I have a 17 year old dog which is deaf and has arthritis that's starting to noticeably slow her down. She has been with me since she was a wee little pup of 6 weeks.

He, too, had suffered way to long. I was completely numb that day and literally stayed that way for days and days. He was my best friend. I still cry even after a year when I see a border collie that resembles him or hear Willy Nelson sing, "He was a friend of mine" or listen to someone tell me about their dog or cat. I remember taking my dear George, basset hound, to the vet the final time. He was old and weak, and had already chosen a spot to die in, but I picked him up and carried him, because I couldn't handle the thought of him dying of thirst or hunger.

As the vet administered the shot, I kept petting him until he was gone.

They make our lives richer, and we will always have our memories of them. A companion, a comforter, an unconditional friend. We fool ourselves into thinking we take care of them, when really they take care of us, and are there for us until they can't anymore.

He will never leave you in spirit because he simply knows that and loves you too much. When you get past the hardest initial grieving days, and that is exactly how one copes with this, through giving oneself permission to grieve and then following through, the loving memories you have of Josh will surface and stay with you the rest of your days.

Take my word for it.

and he didn't feel betrayed, I'm sure of it. They trust and they love unconditionally. There is a reason they're referred to as "man's best friend".

I raise Lab/Golden Retriever mixes, and so many people have such sad stories, it is so gratifying to see their joy when they come to pick up their new best friend. Never as a replacement, they can't be replaced, but as a new "child" to raise.

This is my very first post here at DU after years of reading and lurking, and I'm glad for it to be in response to such beautiful sentiments that you shared. I, too, have a special dog that is now part of who I am forever. He is a rescue that has been with me and my partner for 4 1/2 years. We think he is about 8 1/2 years old now. He is one of our four pets (two pugs, a persian and a himalyan) and I love them all very much. But Jackson, in particular, touches me in ways no pets have before. Thank you for your words that have made me remember once again the love that our pets can bring to our lives. Best be with you.

I hope, after time, you can bring another dog into your life. I currently have four dogs; Two are three years old, and two are under a year. I look at the puppies and think, "When they die of old age, how old will I be? Will I be too old for another dog?"

The average human lifespan is too short for all the dogs I would like to know.

160. I love you for loving Josh so much...
That kind of love is a gift. The gift hurts so much when the giver leaves, but you have the memories and the joy forever. I am sitting at my computer with tears streaming down my face at the thought of what you are going through. I went through it 15 years ago with my Golden, Corky, and it still hurts. That's even though I now have a bigger, dumb Golden, 3 small doggies and 4 cats. I love them dearly and dread losing any of them. Each day I'm grateful for their presence. One of these days, when the tears don't come as often you will be ready to open your heart to a new friend who will need you and give you joy in different ways than Josh did. Pets are the best - with liberals a close second...;-}

Hugs,

Rebecca

PS You didn't betray him. You loved him selflessly. He knew that from the look in YOUR eyes.

161. Dogs Don't Have Souls, Do They?
So sorry for your loss.

Thanks to the Lounge I found this when a friend of mine lost his dog:

Dogs Don't Have Souls, Do They?

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and
cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.

You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and
ears flopping.

Once in a while, you'd let out a little yelp just to
let me know this was your territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything
in sight became a passion, and when I scolded you, you
just put your head down and looked up at me with those
innocent eyes, as if to say, "I'm sorry, but I'll do
it again as soon as you're not watching."

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the
window and barking at everyone who walked by.

When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting
for me with your tail wagging just to say, "Welcome
home. I missed you. "You never had a bad day, and I
could always count on you to be there for me.

When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you
would hop on my lap, looking for attention. You never
asked for anything more than for me to pat your head
so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then,
one day, old age finally took its toll, and you
couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt
down and patted you lying there, trying to make you
young again. You just looked up at me as if to say you
were old and tired and that after all these years of
not asking for anything, you had to ask me for one
last favor. With tears in my eyes, I drove you one
last time to the vet. One last time, you were lying
next to me.

For some strange reason, you were able to stand up in
the animal hospital, perhaps it was your sense of
pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant,
turned your head and looked at me as if to say, "Thank
you for taking care of me.

I thought, "No... thank you for taking care of me."

He didn't feel betrayed, all he felt was your love. We should all be as lucky as Josh and
have the person we love most in the world holding us when we move on. He was a lucky guy to
have had you all these years and you were lucky to have him. It just hurts to much to let them
go but he will be waiting for you and believe me, when he sees you, he won't be befuddled, just overjoyed. Again, so sorry for your loss.

167. My dad got hit hard last year with pet deaths, I know what you're going through
They had two black cats, same litter, who died unexpectedly within weeks of each other. First to die was the female, she got sick. One day later, he went downstairs to check on her and found her dead. No real warning. She was always his cat, she would sit with him and climb on him, she chose him as her favorite. He didn't take it very well when she died.

Two weeks later the male got sick and died that day. No warning beforehand. The male was more mom's cat, but was so playful that everyone loved him. Somehow my dad had managed to teach him to fetch toy mice. He would throw them, the cat would chase them down and come trotting back to dad with the mouse in his mouth, and drop it on him to throw again.

This death he didn't take so well either. He was ok, but you could tell it hit him hard.

Then, a month later, our Scott Terrier, who we had had for 13 years, died. We knew it would be coming, he had been gradually slowing down every day for two years. Every morning my dad would be first to rise for work. He would come downstairs, turn on the kitchen light, and open the bathroom door (where Mac slept). Mac was sometimes waiting, but other times still in bed and would stumble out minutes later as dad was preparing breakfast. This particular morning, Mac didn't rise. But he never came out to greet dad. So he went in, and sure enough, there Mac was, lifeless, on the floor.

That was a phone call I got from mom, because my father, bless him, just didn't want to talk on the phone. I even cried when I heard the news (because he was my dog for the nine years I lived there while they had him) That dog worshipped the ground he walked on for 13 years. When he wasn't with dad, he was waiting for him to come home. Even the idea of dad going outside without him would work Mac up into a concerned frenzy, from which none of my family could console him until dad came back inside or invited him out. Every morning and every evening they would walk, sometimes mom would go with, sometimes I would if I was visiting home.

He won't admit it now, but it affected him. He got a new dog, a black cocker spaniel, last June. But every now and then he slips and calls him Mac.

This was a year ago.

a few months ago. I miss her and still feel her around me. I still cry too.
These ones when they leave us . . . there is such a huge empty place where they used to live.
They do teach us about love. What it means to be totally giving and present. To get such joy out of a stick or an old sock. To run and live with so much appreciation for even the smell of another dog's poop.
Amazing creatures.

My heart is with you. I wish I could say that the pain will pass quickly, but I don't think it's supposed to.

A dear friend and mentor said to me: "Don't heal too fast." Seems like wise words in times of grief.

Dassi was only eight when she died. Far too soon.

170. Sorry to hear this
I am sure he knew you loved him and always wanted the best for him. Making a decision like you did is so difficult but in your heart you knew it would be best for him. I have made the decision to put down an animal because of health conditions and suffering a couple of times in my life but I did it because like you, I loved my fur babies and didn't want them to suffer anymore.

You spoke about your dumb dog and it reminded me of my dumb old dog, "Jake" he was a big rotty and he had hip problems also. I will never forget him and I have the memories that help me love the pets I am lucky enough to care for today. It was Jake and the others that are gone now that remind me that pets may have a shorter life span but they teach us so much and they leave the paw print on the hearts of their owners that allow you to love another pet one day.

Healing is hard but the love remains.

171. You did the right thing....and no, it's never easy
Bravo....in the last 20 years, I have been with and held my Great Dane (Darshaun in 1989), my golden-retriever/german shepherd/coyote rescue Niki (Darshaun's "buddy" in 1993), my Rhodesian Ridgeback (Brutus in 2000), and in 2005 - Brutus's "buddy" Nibblet (half mastiff/half german shepherd). As I held them, I talked to each, petting them, and then watched as the life departed from their trusting eyes as the euthanasia shot took hold. As a Hopi shaman taught me years ago, I would immediately do a mourning wail afterward while my tears flowed.

It never gets easier, but in my opinion, one has the moral responsibility to be there for their passing. How can we not after all the love, loyalty, and joy they had provided to us so freely. -- Michael

I had to put down a family dog about 9 years ago.

I'm really sorry, Bravo 11.
Dogs can get to us when no one else can, sometimes.
Half the time they aren't worth their weight in chicken feathers and the other half of the time you wouldn't swap them for all the gold in Fort Knox.

But, what you did was right.
Relieving them of their pain and misery is the right thing to do.
It takes awhile to realize that, and come to grips with it, but it is the right thing to do.

188. For all pet owners
I know this is about a cat, but it's helped me when losing a pet.

On January 4, 1993, the cat in this book and the books that preceded it was put to sleep in Kerrville, Texas, by DR. W.H. Hoegemeyer and myself. Cuddles was fourteen years old, a respectable age. She was as close to me as any human being I have ever known.
Cuddles and I spent many years together, both in New York, where I found her as a little kitten on the street in Chinatown, and later on the ranch in Texas. She was always with me, on the table, on the bed, by the fireplace, beside the typewriter, on top of my suitcase when I returned from a trip.
I dug Cuddles' grave with a silver spade, in the little garden by the stream behind the old green trailer where both of us lived in the summertime. Her burial shroud was my old New York sweatshirt and in the grave with her is a can of tuna and a cigar.
A few days ago I received a sympathy note from Bill Hoegemeyer, the veterinarian. It opened with a verse by Irving Townsend: "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle…"
Now as I write this, on a gray winter day by the fireside, I can almost feel her light tread moving from my head and my heart down through my fingertips to the keys of the typewriter. People may surprise you with unexpected kindness. Dogs have a depth of loyalty that we often seem unworthy of. But the love of a cat is a blessing, a privilege in this world.
They say when you die and go to heaven all the dogs and cats you ever owned in your life come running to meet you.
Until that day, rest in peace Cuddles.

Member of the Family

What would I do without you,
My precious, furry friend?...
Part mischief, but all blessing,
And faithful to the end!

You look at me with eyes of love;
You never hold a grudge…
You think I’m far too wonderful
To criticize or judge.

It seems your greatest joy in life
Is being close to me…
I think God knew how comforting
Your warm, soft fur would be.

I know you think you’re human,
But I’m glad it isn’t true…
The world would be a nicer place
If folks were more like you!

A few short years are all we have;
One day we’ll have to part…
But you, my pet, will always have
A place within my heart.

A Lab/Coonhound mix, and a bit of wild girl, who ran like the wind. We really really loved each other, and now we love her Pal, Barley, alone.

Barley's a tan Lab/Golden, and he's bit of a country boy, very loving and laid back. He just had his knee operated on -- "typical sports injury", the vet said -- veterenary othopedic surgery is very expensive, but he's worth everything we can give him.

Our daughter recommends a book, "Marley and Me". It's about the life of a Lab and those he left behind.

I still cry about Blanche.

207. Your last sentence brought back such memories, it made me cry.
8 1/2 years ago we had to put down our Lhasa, Dusty. He was ten, and although fairly healthy, he had always had two moods: Lovey and biting! Lovey was by far the predominate mood, and the biting was really just nipping, but as he aged, and aches and pains set in, biting began to make more of an appearance. Finally, he went so far as to seriously bite my wife on both hands, as she attempted to pick him up. We couldn't live with a dog she was afraid of, even though he was obviously sorry for what he had done.

I held him as the vet shaved his leg, and sobbed as he held it out to her for the injection. My wife and and I were basket cases that whole weekend, even though he was "Just a dog...just a damn dog...and a mean one at that!"

After several days of spontaneously bursting into tears, we framed a picture of him, and put it where we could easily see it. That helped quite a lot, and a month later, my mother-in-law gave us her dachshund. He's now 13, blind and deaf, and I fear what may soon be necessary. It was had enough with Dusty, but Sandman doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

We lost our two dachshunds within 2 weeks of each other. They were 14 and 16, old and sick. It was horrible.

212. read this whole thread - so many caring, loving souls here!
to share your grief over the loss of your dear friend. We had to put our beloved Annie dog down just 3 months ago so I feel all of your grief with you and more.
Thankyou for sharing your feelings with us. I was already in tears watching once again, the reunion of that soldier and his son at the son's school. Came here, saw this and just let the tears flow as they have many times since our own loss.

What a blessing to be able to share our feelings together. Yes, I did see the Rainbow bridge after Annie's passing through it and so will you dear one.

213. Very sorry for your loss, 11 Bravo...
we lost our beloved Lab last year at the age of 12, the one year anniversary of his death is coming upon us fast, and I'm dreading it. He wasn't just a dog, he was a big part of your life, and a cherished one. You'll never forget him. I know I'll never forget any of mine, and I've lost several now. As you say, their love is unconditional, take comfort in the fact that you gave him the best life you could, and you loved him, and that's all he needed.

215. I hope this helps....
C.S. Lewis once wrote something to this effect--

Most animals on this planet are what we commonly refer to as "dumb animals". Without souls, without hope and without cause. BUT...

There are some animals that grace our lives and we grace them-- literal grace. We take in/adopt a puppy and something happens. Something wonderful happens. We bestow on them a part of our own grace. We give to them our own hopes, our own happiness and our own joys.

In effect, God is allowing us to impart to these particular animals a part of our very own souls. We extend our divinity to the animals in much the same way that God has extended part of His divinity to us.

We give these animals something they couldn't have in the wild-- Grace. And we can see it, too. Over a period of time, we can actually our own love for that animal reflected in its eyes. (Was this what John Lennon meant-- "...and the Love we take is equal to the Love we make"?).

And over a period of time and through the love we give it and share with it, not only does that animal rise above being a "mere dumb animal", not only does that animal rise above simply being our pet, we actually help that animal to become a part of the Human family with its most concomitant of blessings-- a soul, the ability to transcend these earthly trappings and to one day dwell amongst the angels. And, in the end, to greet us, bark at us and slobber over our faces when we too finally enter the Kingdom of God.

So Bravo, I can only hope that this may allow some consolation. Josh recognized your love for him just as you recognized his love for you. I don;t know if it's true or not that "all dogs go to heaven", but I think I can safely guarantee you that Josh did.

And realize this-- the more you cry, the more saddened you get thinking about him and the more you miss him only advertises the depth of your love and your affection for him-- and he knew it, too. These thoughts gave me some solace when I put my Henry down. I hope it may give you comfort also. We who are befriended by animals know that there is a indescribable and inexplicable two-way bond of absolute and total love.

Peace, my friend. I'll drink a silent toast to Josh tonight.

Take care. You made the hardest choice anybody has to make.

218. I am so very sorry, 11Bravo.
In August 2005, I held my dear, sweet kitty Teddy in my arms, and he looked at me with those great big, beautiful blue eyes as his doctor lovingly helped him to peace. His eyes were saying "thank you for loving me enough to stop my suffering".

Two and a half months later, my sister and I held our beloved mother's hand as her doctor turned of her respirator, and she too gained peace. She had a smile on her face as she died, letting us know she was alright.

I beleive neither of them, Mum nor Teddy, would have had it any other way. My mother and father are now together again, and they have been joined again by Freckles and Cha-Cha (our family dogs when I was growing up), and my Teddy is with them as well.

Your Josh is thanking you as well.....Best always.

219. I wanted to be with our cat when she was put down, but the vets
Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 12:48 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
thought they were being kind to me by spinning me a line. They told me they'd let me know when, but didn't.

She was blind and her brain had almost completely gone, probably from organo-phosphate flea powder or mad cow-infected cat meat, but earlier she knew the moment I entered the vet's surgery room.

Apparently, she was pretty wild with them, and I feel sure if they'd let me know so I could have been there with her, she would have been reassured. Maybe they thought I'd crack up, but I'd only do that afterwards, as I did in the event. I'd have been pleased for her at the time, because it was to spare her suffering.

she'd fought them fiercely. Though I'd been expecting to be notified and allowed to be there with her, I couldn't help feeling I'd let her down.

I don't mean, of course, to impugn the kindness or the motives of those vets and nurses. Their good intentions were unmistakable.

:grouphug:

Those furkids sure do dig their way into our hearts, don't they?

So very, very sorry for your loss.
I have been there and understand how painful it is.

Josh was lucky to have lived with and been loved by such a caring, loving person as yourself. It was an act of love to let him go when living got too painful. Being there with him was the final show of love.

When first you bend to pet me
Find I'm no longer there
When first you rush to greet me
And only stop and stare
When first you find my toys
Still hidden in you bed
When first you start to call me
Then shed a tear instead
When first you find me snuggled
Still deep inside your heart
At last you sense me watching
You know we're not apart
At last you feel my angel wings
Brush soft against your skin
At last your tears give way to smiles
To know we'll meet again

222. Don't be ashamed of your feelings
I went through something similar when I had to put my cat Turtle to sleep (as I was holding her) at age 17 after she was devastated by Cancer. Even though I now have two wonderful new kitties, even as I write this, I am still tearing up at the memory. Love is love, whether aimed at a person or a pet.

229. Loss of a beloved pet is excruciating
For me the loss is still hurting too much to even think about it without crying...even though it was last August when she died. We were almost 20 years with that incredible furry orange girl with her wild spirit.

One of the most incredible things she ever did happened a month before she died. A song from the new Bob Dylan album was playing on the radio that touched me a lot. She must have sensed it because she did somthing extraordinary. She jumped up on my lap and stood up in a rather awkward position and pushed her cheek up against mine--- and HELD IT THERE UNTIL THE SONG WAS OVER!

This is not something cats do!

While it was happening I felt as though angels had decended and I was ecstatic to be so blessed. Tears streamed down my cheeks onto her fur, but she didn't seem to mind.

Blessings and hugs to you Bravo.

231. So sorry! I lost my Abby and went through the same at the end.
She had a stroke and could barely stand, she would fall over. There was nothing too be done in the way of a cure and the vet said I could take her home and let her pass on her own, but she had already suffered too much and so I held her while the vet administered the shot. I felt horrible and cried for days after. They aren't just dogs or cats, they are our family members. I hope you feel better soon.

232. so sadly, you did the right thing...
intuitively, you knew that it was time...you DID do the right thing.

I've been there. I held my cat of over 21 years as the vet admin the shot as well. I so wanted her to die on her own, but that feisty, playful old lady calico just kept living - even a few weeks beyond what the vet predicted as an old cat's liver goes into failure.

She was deaf, almost blind - but totally able to play and walk and clean herself up until 2 days before she died. When she became too weak to walk - that day I took her in. She was no longer able to simply be herself.

Also could not stop crying.

She lived a great and wild cat's life living on 5 wooded acres that most of seemed as vast endless jungle to her. She was happy.

And your big ol dumb ass of a dog also had a life where he was loved and appreciated till the last second - even going through the screen door x 3! A wonderful dog's life indeed!!!!
