1. "Mom, why am I a devastating consequence?"
That's going to be an awkward conversation

"But Mommy...."

"I said to call me Mommy Dearest...."

"Yes , Mommy Dearest."

"You little bitch. When I said to call me Mommy Dearest I wanted you to MEAN IT!"

7. I thought that too
Is that a Candies Foundation ad? I saw that in a magazine or something recently and thought it was the dumbest prevention ad I've ever seen. So much wrong with it, it's hard to know where to start. The lack of a head might be a good place though. sheesh.

9. Yes, it's from Candies.
The company that makes sexy underwear for tweens.

And the company that is sponsoring the abstinence campaign Bristol Palin is spokesperson for.

These people make my head hurt.

11. That is so sad
Candies used to be such a great company. I just looked to see if they were the same and found the Kohl's web site. Thongs in junior sizes 4-8. A prevention foundation doesn't make that okay.

:wow:

14. Some excerpts from the candiesfoundation site
"Celebrities that have participated in the campaigns include Beyonce, Ciara, Jenny McCarthy, Vanessa Minnillo, Ashley Tisdale, Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, Usher, Rachel Bilson, Teddy Geiger amongst many others.

Celebrity Messages Include:

• Be Sexy: It Doesn’t Mean You Have to Have Sex
• Be Smart: Don’t Give Up Your Education
• Be Smart: You Are Too Young to Start
• Not Really the Way You Pictured Your First Crib
• Not What You Had in Mind for Your First Set of Wheels
• You Think Being in School Sucks"

"The Event to Prevent
Each year The Candies Foundation hosts an annual fundraising event to honor individuals that have done exceptional work for the cause and helped advance the foundation message.

Past Honorees have included Senator Hilary Clinton, Katie Couric, Paula Zahn, Governor Thomas Keen, Jane Fonda, Kim Catrall, etc. Past Performers have included Jackson Browne, Jennifer Hudson, Lionel Richie, Teddy Geiger, Jewel, Ashlee Simpson, Destiny’s Child, etc."

"2. Talk with your children early and often about sex, and be specific.
Kids have lots of questions about sex, and they often say that the source they'd most like to go to for answers is their parents. Start the conversation, and make sure that it is honest, open, and respectful. If you can't think of how to start the discussion, consider using situations shown on television or in movies as conversation starters. Tell kids candidly and confidently what you think and why you take these positions; if you're not sure about some issues, tell them that, too. Be sure to have a two-way conversation, not a one-way lecture. Ask them what they think and what they know so you can correct misconceptions. Ask what, if anything, worries them."

"Many inexpensive books and videos are available to help with any detailed information you might need, but don't let your lack of technical information make you shy. Kids need as much help in understanding the meaning of sex as they do in understanding how all the body parts work.Tell them about love and sex, and what the difference is. And remember to talk about the reasons that kids find sex interesting and enticing; discussing only the "downside" of unplanned pregnancy and disease misses many of the issues on teenagers' minds."

I don't really see anything wrong with what this foundation is trying to do. People may be bashing it soley because it's the flavor of the month and not because of any independent research they've done.

18. The goals are terrific
Some of us grew up with Candies shoes and this is just not the Candies we remember. And it makes no sense to put size 4 juniors in thongs, tell them to be sexy, and then truly believe they aren't going to have sex.

they may be trying to get the message across that teens ought not be ashamed of their bodies but that's just a guess on my part.

21. Sorry.
Not buying that at all. It's nothing more than crass commercial hypocrisy.

Sure, we encourage your junior high aged daughter to dress like a 5 dollar hooker, but we've started this really neat abstinence campaign so we're cool, right?

And to top it off, a girl who clearly did not abstain will be our abstinence spokesperson while Britney Spears - every parent's favorite role model - models our latest whore-wear of the week for you.

Arghhh!

24. She certainly is. And to add: she's getting a check for this as well.
If someone is a paid spokesperson for a foundation, they are open to public criticism and scrutiny and for that matter, mockery by late night talk show hosts.

Dave still did the classy thing by apologizing. Liked the intent v. perception distinction he made.

But if Governor Bible Spice doesn't want comedians and talk show hosts cracking on her eldest daughter she best advise her to remove herself from the public spotlight.
