My understanding is that Social Security was passed by Congress without one single Republican vote. Democrats of that era were apparently not real concerned about offending conservative sensibilities and, while they probably would have agreed that bipartisanship was a good thing, they did not see it as an absolute requirement before legislation could proceed.
On health care, on card check, on many of the financial crisis issues inherited from the Bush pirates, we have invited the GOP to the table to discuss our options and possible solutions. They refused to sit down with us.
We asked them to at least voice their thoughts, share their ideas. They offered only criticism, apocalyptic predictions and snarky press releases.
At this point, do we really give a big brown rat's ass what these obstructionist political whores think or prefer or want?
Does anyone believe that ANYTHING proposed by Democrats will be met with the approval of these people?
I think the time has come to give all concerned, including the "Blue Dogs", a final 48 hour advance notice: get on the wagon or you'll be under the bus. We have given the opportunity to be heard. The only thing they've said is "NO!"
We should do whatever needs to be done to pass single-payer and card check as soon as possible. They are never going to love us, but we can make sure they understand that the days of Republican belligerence yielding Demcratic capitulation or appeasement are GONE.
It's called "respect".
