I accept Letterman's apology.
His staff fucked up by not doing the research, and he did the right thing by taking responsibility.

I reject the quibble that his apology was insincere. He seemed genuinely ashamed at making an inappropriate joke about Willow Palin.

I also reject the assertion that Willow "had it coming" because of who her mother is, or because she resembles her sister - not that her sister deserves it either, but that's a whole nother issue. Seriously, what the fuck are either of them supposed to do, run away from home and cook meth for a living?

Anyway, he apologized, and that's that. The fact that RW partisans are still making a big deal out of it just goes to show how pathetic they are.

7. The Joke WASN'T About Willow
Sheesh...enough of the hate radio talking points. He didn't say a name and anyone with half of a functioning one knew he was refering to the 18-year old who just happened to have been "knocked up" and was paraded around the campaign trail then exploited on daytime teevee. We didn't see the Obama girls or even the booooosh twins on talk shows...hell, I didn't even know either boooosh twin could speak coherantly until the '04 RNC.

While Dave could have stated those jokes in a different way, there was a truth to what he said and has no need to appologize. He wasn't the one who spent hundreds of thousands on a wardrobe then tried to flirt into the White House by winking during the VP debate. He isn't the one who turned his daughter's pregnancy into a Palin Place...she turned their lives into a Reality Show...they became public figures and with it comes the scrutiny.

17. And Palin was uber stupid...
Beyond her usual, in picking a fight with a freakin comedian anyway! And double uber stupid for lying her putrid ass off and saying it was about Willow, when anyone with three or more brain cells who pays attention knows without quesion this was about BRISTOL!

I'm so freaking sick of the stupidity... and when stupid happens here on DU, it reeks far worse than the average shit.

Palin did this to her own family, then has the nerve to complain about a joke from a comedian. Jesus help us.

All I can say is... PALIN 2012! I sincerely hope she runs! I can't think of a better gift to the Democratic party!

11. He did seem sincere
No doubt the joke was written by his staff, who probably believed that Bristol was at the game instead of the underage daughter.

Because of the circumstance of who was actually at the game in question, the brunt of the joke fell on a 14 year old girl.

That wasn't the intention, but that was what happened.

13. Remember when McCain-Palin campaign insinuated Obama was a pedophile?
They had an ad that claimed Obama wanted to teach kindergarden children about anal sex or some such nonsense, when Obama actually wanted to teach kids to stay away from predators.

I guess that tactic worked so well that Palin had to drag it out again.

26. Yes, she was paraded around by her mother like she was riding the first float
at the Rose Bowl Parade.

Don't put thoughts into what I wrote--never did I say there's anything wrong with being pregnant.

My issue is with the policies of Sarah Palin, who wants to force her beliefs on everyone else, with little or no regard for the beliefs of others. And she didn't hesitate to use her daughter when it was politically convenient for her to do so. There are many examples of similar comments having been made in the media, and they weren't issues at the time. They were posted here at DU earlier today.

Back the hell off.

Sarah brought them out into the limelight. She wasn't forced to run for VP, but when you do you also know you and your family are open to inspection by the American people. It comes with the job.

Bristol went along with it as well.

It was a JOKE. A fucking JOKE. Letterman apologized. Get over it already! :eyes:
