9) Days after the announcement of Bristol’s pregnancy, Conan O’Brien joked, “It’s true, John McCain’s running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, ‘We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.’” Where was the outrage? Was Conan promoting infidelity with an underage girl?

8 ) From two different Tonight Shows: “Governor Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. Oh, boy, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before, now he’s really done it!” AND…“All the Republicans are heaping praise on Governor Palin. Fred Thompson said, as an actor, he could see them making a movie about Sarah Palin and her family. Didn’t they already make that movie? I think it was called ‘Knocked Up!’”–Jay Leno

1) The “candidate who must be obeyed” was talking about Palin’s family when he said, “Kids are off limits.” Jake Tapper of ABC News interviewed then Candidate Obama, and asked, “Governor Palin and her husband issued a statement today saying their 17-year-old daughter Bristol, who is unmarried, is five months pregnant. Do you have any reaction?”

OBAMA: “I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off-limits. And people’s children are especially off-limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know, my mother had me when she was 18. And, you know, how family deals with issues and — and, you know, teenaged children, that shouldn’t be the topic of — of our politics.”

The Palin children have been fodder for comedians since they were brought to the national stage. Incest isn’t funny. Ugly kid jokes aren’t funny. Many of the things said about public figures are just flat wrong. Being “knocked up” isn’t much fun. Racist comments hurt all of us. I exhausted the top 10 list before I ran out of outrageous instances ignored by the Palins.

The National Organization for Women named David Letterman to their Hall of Shame. Will Letterman be joining Jay Leno? Conan O’Brien? Craig Ferguson? Seth Myers? Rush Limbaugh? Or John McCain? Of course not! I guess N.O.W. didn’t bother checking Sarah Palin’s “feminist” credentials. All across America, right wing radio and television talk show hosts feigned outrage in perfect synchronicity. The same people who back up Palin’s high drama assertions against Letterman ignored the connections between Bill O’Reilly’s irresponsible incitement and the murder of Dr. George Tiller. David Letterman, a late night entertainer, apologized. Fox New’s Bill O’Reilly has not.


As a parent, I understand being defensive. I just wonder what took so long. Why now?

And just for good measure, in case you all missed it during the campaign, here is Sarah Palin giggling at local shock jocks calling former state congresswoman Republican Lyda Green a "bitch" and calling her a "cancer," when everyone knows she is a cancer survivor.

3. Why don't we kick the whole "fake pregnancy" thing back in gear?

If the "birthers" are still ranting about Obama, why don't we go back and ask her to produce the birth certificate for Twig or Trogg or whatever her youngest is named?

I'd still guess she pulled the same stunt Bree on Desperate Housewives did to cover for an earlier Bristol pregnancy.

5. There's even some question now about how old Willow

actually is. Sarah keeps saying her "14-year-old daughter," but there are reports that her birthday is actually January 21, 1994, which would make her 15-1/2. I've also seen a July 1994 date, which would make her almost 15, and somewhere else I saw 1995. She should just produce ALL the birth certificates. :evilgrin:

Here is a very relevant comment by "Anon" to Shannyn's post. This is most likely the truth behind this whole 'outrage.'

This whole faux outrage is to deflect from Palin’s disastrous PR week:
1) a murdering right wing terrorist is revealed to be one of her admirers;
2) she plagiarizes Gingrich;
3) the GOP disinvites her to speak at a major dinner;
4) she overreacts to a comedian before anyone can stop her;
5) she signs away AK’s future to the one oil company most Alaskans hate.

9. this isssue seems very important to you, but to me, not so much.

Its Palin's manufactured poutrage and weak-livered pandering for victim status. And that is all that it is.

Republicans feel frightened and victimized by comedians and cartoon characters on kid's shows, while they themselves wink and suggest Obama should be assasinated, and make rape victims pay for their own rape kits.

10. I'm not saying that at all.

I'm saying that Sarah may be lying about her "14-year-old" daughter's true age to maximize the effect of her "outrage." I'm saying that Sarah is a liar, as she has proven more times than I can count. I'm a citizen of the state that she 'governs' and I've been watching her very closely, and what's been reported on DU is just the tip of the iceberg. Lying is what she does. Exaggerate is what she does. And playing the victim card is what she does in spades.

I'm saying that since it doesn't appear that Willow was at the game at all, this outrage is completely manufactured, especially in the context of all the other jokes that have been told that Sarah has ignored.

Bristol is not a child. She is a legal adult and a public figure in her own right. And THAT is who the joke was about (and A-rod).

Contrary to your faux outrage, I do believe that children are off limits. Until two things happen: 1) they turn 18 2) they become a public figure in their own right.

here's the link to the vetting of Palin from 2006, which states Willow's birth as 94. The doctor's statement and ADN also concur with '94.

I certainly wish she had been vetted more publicly before her run for governor in 2006. I'm especially irritated with Wasillans for being so close-mouthed about her term as mayor out there. We were all so fed up with Frank Murkowski by November 2006 (he was the 50th most popular governor in the country by the time he left office) that she looked good by comparison. After this debacle, everybody will probably be afraid to vote next year. Who ARE these people? Can you trust any of them?

yeah, I found this vetting document a while ago, and it shocked me. It was only in PDF form back then. Now it's online for anyone to read -- and yet, most people don't bother and this person was running for VP!!!

Hell yes I want to read the vetting document! Did you notice how many vehicles they had in the last few years?? 20 or something nutty like that? WTH???

Not sure if this is the one, but the PDF I downloaded last fall had her IQ and it was downright SCARY.

:rofl: Here's a little history lesson about Wasilla. When I first moved to Alaska in 1975, Wasilla was just a little wide spot in the road, kind of a hippie backwoods town, similar to what Talkeetna is now (for those of you who know Alaska). But sometime in the '90s, as Anchorage's population became more and more diverse, many of the ultra-conservative white Christian types who didn't want to live around "those people" began a mass exodus to the Valley, ballooning Wasilla's population and turning the sleepy little town into a conservative religious enclave.

Now, as to your "cousins" comment, I've worked for several years as a legal transcriptionist, and I can tell you that there seem to be a disproportionate number of child sexual abuse cases that come out of Wasilla. I don't know why, but it does seem to be a trend. Additionally, as you've all heard, Wasilla is the meth capital of Alaska. I don't know what it means, but that's where it is.

On another note, last Tuesday when our Assembly was hearing comments on a proposed equal rights ordinance for the GLBT community, one of the ultraconservative churches out there brought in busloads of kids to protest. You can see photos of these kids here: http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/06/at-anchorage-assembly-meeting-on-civil.html Given the fact that some of these kids may actually turn out to BE gay, teaching them to hate homosexuals is child abuse in my mind. Not to mention the fact that this is ANCHORAGE'S assembly and Anchorage's proposed ordinance, not Wasilla's. They should stay out of our local politics.

My son-in-law's mother, who used to live in Wasilla in the old days, says it's pretty obvious when you go into any of the stores out there now who are the old-timers and who are the more recent emigrants from Anchorage. The "real" Wasillans are kind of scruffy long-hairs, they smell of woodsmoke and pot, and they smile a lot. The newcomers are the ones with the pinched faces and tight asses.

As an Anchorage resident, I say "good riddance," but I feel really sad for what they've done to a nice little town.
