13. Granny, this is not helping the Iranian people who need our support.

There's been a couple of diaries lately suggesting that we try to shut down Iranian gov't websites through DDOS attacks. This is a bad idea.

You see, it seems that the offending website is actually hosted in Iran. Iran is not your modern open developed nation with gigabit links coming out of its ears. It does not have unlimited transit, and it is likely that all its transit it through one or two carriers. If these links are overwhelmed by armchair protesters DDOSing the website, then Internet access from Iran to the outside world may be disrupted, and it's even possible that the carrier, which will also be catering to other under-developed nations in the region, will simply pull the plug to protect the rest of their network.

This is a particularly large problem because the Internet is probably about the best source of uncensored news in the country at the moment.

If everyone were actually to do this, we'd risk losing the Twitter feeds and emails that are providing the eyewitness accounts to the current events in Tehran, all to shut down websites for a regime that is already losing credibility fast.

2. not sure how this works..
"ALL PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD:

Please help us in a full-scale cyberwar againts the dictatorial brutal government of Ahmadinjead! Help Iranians to earn back their votes per instructions below:

Simply click on few of the following links (better too choose your selections from different categories); it opens the site in a new tab. It will not stop you from browsing but by sending a refresh signal to the target site will saturate it. By doing so, we can block Ahmadinjead's governments flow of information in many of its key components as shown below.

Please help us and yourself from this lunatic who will push the world to world war III."

3. This is the message I got:
the maximum number of users reached

Server is busy, try again later

I'd say the idea is to block the Iranian government from using the Web.

14. Not really. In fact, this makes things worse
A) Slowing down Iran's public-facing websites doesn't do anything to harm their internal communication (eg, if whitehouse.gov gets DOS'd, that doesn't keep Obama from talking to the FBI).

B) Overloading web, DNS services, and routing probably does make it harder for normal Iranians to communicate with each other.

17. This is a terrible idea. I hope you don't shut down emergency services in Tehran
or sites that the protesters need to keep going. Seriously, think about what you're doing.

18. Then why are the protesters themselves
urging everyone in the world to do this? I have seen at least 20 Iranian tweeters begging us to do this, and giving the list. I have seen where people are tweeting from all over Europe, and are participating in shutting down Iranian gov't websites that protesters want shut down. As long as it is Iranian gov't websites that are run by Iranian officials who are coordinating against the protesters, why not participate?

It's illegal? Are you kidding me? Seriously?

20. OK, those tweeters are the same that
Andrew Sullivan and HuffoPo bloggers are following....

Let me see, they are there.

You are here.

They want the world to help shut down those government sites. I'm following their advice and their request....not yours. Carry on.

What do you think is going to happen with this brilliant plan?

This is a prescription for prompting a crack down on all communications in Iran.

Also, it feeds a propaganda bonanza to the hardliners: Americans attacking Iranian sites!

And what are you going to say when, down the line, someone does this kind of thing to sites that advocate DOS? You're inviting automated attacks on DU.
