I went to my younger brother's high school graduation yesterday. It is a small
private school with a small graduating class. So parents were invited to speak about their kids on stage when picking up their diplomas.

One parent commented, while praising his daughter and the educational experience, that "IT DOESN'T TAKE A VILLAGE, IT TAKES PARENTS."

1. It takes parents and a village.

S/he's presenting a false dichotomy.

Way to go to teach your children logical fallacies and close-minded binary thinking, parent. Congratulations, you are a public dumbass.

3. Well said!
:applause:

People mistake that sort of thing for something they call "strength".

2. Still bitter about a book that was written 13 years ago
I never could figure out just how that message of "it takes a village" is somehow incompatible with parenting.

10. I heard Republicans spinning it as either/or.
Supposedly "It takes a village" fans were being encouraged to abandon their parental responsibilities altogether and expect other people to look after their kid(s).

6. Their big moment...
...and they rip-off a line from Bob Dole's acceptance speech at the Republican convention.

Lame.

7. So his daughter never goes to the doctor, never talks to the librarian,
did not have teachers, etc. This man does not even know he lives in a village.

8. If parents are the only people who matter,
then why send your kids to an expensive private school? The public school would be just as good.

I think the parent knows that, in reality, being part of a supportive community is important for a kid's education.

9. Why do I get the feeling....
...that had Reagan or Caribou Barbie coined the "it takes a village..." phrase, this particular parent would have gone to great lengths to quote it?
