1. no executions at all-- state sponsored murder is no less evil...
Edited on Sun Jun-14-09 02:48 PM by mike_c
...than the crimes it revenges. Since there is absolutely no evidence that capital punishment is an effective crime deterrent, that leaves revenge as the primary motive for using it. We can do better, I think.

2. sure we can do better, but why start there?
we should try to achieve social and economic justice first. While we're working on that, think of the entertainment value!

:sarcasm: in case you couldn't tell

3. No thanks.
TV is bad enough already.

I would expect Fox to jump on this sort of thing. They always like to take the lead when going downwards.

6. Nice way to measure devolution.
For the record: no capital punishment period, let alone capital punishment as a spectator sport.

16. they'd put it on basic cable for a short time, pretending that deterrence was the rationale,
then, it would move to premium cable, so people would have to borrow money to be able to afford it.

was convicted of doing unspeakably horrible things to kitty-cats?

12. I'm against the death penalty in all cases..
But if we're going to have executions they should be public.

Let people see what they are getting for their money.

13. Lethal injections would be too boring
for jaded American lovers of violence. We would have to bring back hangings and other more barbaric forms of capital punishment to keep people interested.

14. Abso-fucking-lutely.
If state sponsored homicide is to be the law of the land, then individuals should be able to see what's being done in their name.

21. You know, I don;t have to answer it
they SHOULD BE PUBLIC... EVERY EXECUTION should be public.

Before you scream... why do you think they went behind the prison walls? Ever asked yourselves that question? Support for the death penalty was at an all time low... and in order to keep it we needed to make it sterile and GO BEHIND THE WALLS.

So in order to get rid of it, unfortunately we will should make them public and yes, mandatory viewing.

Will they deter a criminal or two? We already know that... but perhaps the horror factor will be enough for the otherwise asleep at the switch population, to demand they stop. All will take is a botched execution or two.

And yes It pains me that somebody will have to suffer, no matter how horrific the crime was. But that is what I fear it will take.

Oh and watch pro death penalty proponents fight ideas like this... after all they might have to watch what they support.

23. Have two performers wearing plush animal costumes ...
like those found
in theme parks
do slapstick horseplay
buffoonish fighting
shoving each other around
etc
until one of them falls
against an oversized switch
delivering the death jolt
to the condemned
Uh oh!

That would be so cool
