Tehran Bureau Suggests A *Military* Coup!
Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 09:25 PM by BlooInBloo
http://tehranbureau.com/2009/06/13/spokesman-political-coup/

"In an interview, Mr. Mohsen Makhbalbaf, the distinguish movie director and spokesman for Mr. Mir Hossein Mousavi, has declared that there has been a coup in Iran whereby the elections have been rigged, and people’s vote have been altered on a vast scale, in order to declare President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the “victor.”

According to Mr. Makhbalbaf, in the early hours after voting had ended, the Interior Ministry had called Mr. Mousavi’s campaign headquarters to inform them that Mr. Mousavi would be the winner and, therefore, Mr. Mousavi must prepare a victory statement. Mr. Mousavi was, however, asked by the Ministry not to boast too much, in order not to upset Mr. Ahmadinejad’s supporters. Many of the president’s supporters are among the ranks of the Basij militia, and thus armed.

According to Mr. Makhbalbaf, the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was also informed of the developments. He also recommended a “good management” of the victory statement, meaning not boasting greatly about the victory, because that would be in Iran’s national interests and stability.

At the same time, the reformist newspapers were also informed that they can prepare their Saturday edition to declare Mr. Mousavi the winner, but were not allowed to use the word pirouzi (victory) in their articles, in order not to upset Mr. Ahmadinejad’s supporters. One reformist newspaper prepared its front page with the title, “People took back the flag of their country .”

But, just a few hours later, a center that had been set up by Mr. Mousavi in Gheytarieh (in northern Tehran) for monitoring the election and vote counting, was attacked by armed security agents. They ransacked the center, destroyed computers, and attacked the staff. Supporters of Mr. Mousavi intervened and arrested 8 security agents. The police was called to take them to prison, but the police released the attackers."

By way of Sully: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/06/was-it-a-military-coup.html

"A coup that originated with the military rather than the clerical or lay political leaders resolves what I saw the the main flaw with Juan Cole's reconstruction. It also dovetails well with Interior Ministry employees' warnings that Ayatollah Mesbah-Yazdi, who is influential in the military, issued a fatwa authorizing manipulation of the elections. A coup led by the military is also easier to explain than one ordered by Ayatollah Khamene'i. I had been thinking about the implications of a Mousavi victory, and concluded that, given the continuing conservative dominance of Parliament, the most important changes for Iranians would be a different economic policy and the replacement of someone hostile to the old revolutionary establishment embodied by the likes of Rafsanjani with someone who was actually a part of it. "

EDIT: Mixed up my linkys.

15. They didn't even try to rig the results to make them seem plausible.
And a bunch of people have been killed on the streets in the rioting in Teheran, per these "alerts from Tehran:"

Some texts: http://tehranbureau.com/2009/06/13/alerts-from-tehran/

Tehran resident:
go out peacefully and beep your horn or hold up our posters…..just be out there tonight.
all sms and txt messaging is still down in tehran

Tehran resident: Friends abroad if your media is telling you we voted for Ahmadinejad, it’s a big lie. There are riots on the streets of Tehran. people are out on the streets again just beeping their horns and giving the victory sign. The kids are chanting ahmadi pinochet Irean won’t be chile! Everyone in iRan come out even in your cars and show your green ribbons and beep your horn.

For the moment, facebook is just blocked right now. I am in Elahieh neighbourhood. I hear shooting right now I am writing. the shootings were far away. 12:51 noon Eastern US.
Dispatch: Chaos in the streets of Tehran. Stuck for an hour in a riot near the Ministry of the Interior. Police & Basij beating protesters.

Re Mousavi arrest: have not been able to confirm Mousavi arrest today. had a conflicting report today. tb
Journo: Panic on the streets of Tehran. Outside mass protests. Between 50-100 dead. Police on motorcycles beating people as drive by; attacking women.

Hadi Ghaemi reported concrete barriers installed around the Interior Ministry:

Concrete Texas Barriers / Hard Stop are not small. They aren’t the sort of thing one has lying about in a city police station on the off chance they might be needed. Similarly, due to its weight, one normally needs Mechanical Handling Equipment to move it. Such tractors, and their drivers, are again hardly the sort of thing one has in a city police station on a regular basis. This was a pre-planned operation.

from Iran sent 2:43 AM Tehran-time (6:13 EST)
“Here the internet is horrible. After much trouble, I was able t log on through a proxy. I’ll try my best to get the news to you. I have news right now that in Shahrake Gharb is absolute chaos. People are in the streets, they’re chanting. No sign of police. Their protest continues at this hour. I also hear that Niavaran is a big chaotic too — at least until an hour ago. I’m sorry my information is fragmented. I’m afraid I’ll get disconnected. In Niavaran people are shouting from their homes. That way when police comes they quickly retreat; so they haven’t been able to arrest anyone. I’ve also heard that people captured a few of the Basij guys and gave him a beating. It feels like Martial Law here. Cell phones are down, internet lines are horrible, Facebook is filtered, and … I also have news from Ahvaz. They have also announced there that if someone comes out of their house they will be arrested. So keep your fingers crossed and pray for us. Tomorrow is a great day. I gave you the news. Please try to publish it. Thx.”

9. Wow.
It didn't even take the military to complete the coup here. But American Idle was on...so America watched and voted for their favorite entertainer...
Maybe Americans can watch and see what Iranians are willing to give up to insure that their votes be counted. Of course, the msm isn't covering it...is that a coincidence?

19. They've only gone so far as to suggest irregularities.
They haven't said the "coup" word, but that's what it is.

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday the U.S. hopes the outcome of the contested Iranian presidential election reflects the "genuine will and desire" of the Iranian people.

"We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds in Iran, but we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide," Clinton said at an event in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, in a statement, said the Obama administration is paying close attention to reports of alleged election irregularities.

At a joint appearance with Clinton, Canadian foreign affairs minister Lawrence Cannon said his country was "deeply concerned" by reports of irregularities in the election.

"We're troubled by reports of intimidation of opposition candidates' offices by security forces," Cannon said. "Canada is calling on Iranian authorities to conduct fair and transparent counting of all ballots.".....

31. I am terribly sad about this turn of events. I was really hoping for a moderation of
the rhetoric, and I was so looking forward to MIR, MIR, MIR! Instead, people are getting beaten and killed in the street, and the reformers are under house arrest. This is just horrible. A giant step backward.

14. Wow. Just wow. Can't even process the implications of this.
The mullahs are arguing amongst themselves?! Notably, the ones with the weapons typically win so if Ahmadinejad’s supporters in the military are backing him then this means serious shit in the ME.

34. Sibel Edmonds. Who has the inside scoop on US corruption
from her stint as a translator. She overheard convos that would make your blood boil. She's been trying to get her story "out" about how US politics is riddled with arms dealers, insider trading, and global collusion/corruption on an unprecedented scale.

She was officially silenced by the US courts but has decided instead to bravely speak out.

She is a true heroine in this age.

Have US courts banned her from the country? I don't see how the courts silence people from speaking. Sounds like tyrany or some such. The courts need to be arrested. Thanks for your information on Sibel Edmonds. I wish we could hear her story on network news. Surprised Moyers hasn't allowed her story to be heard.

Or as close to LIVE as you will get.

NOT on CNN. NOT on NBC. NOT on NPR.

NOT on CBS. NOT on ABC. NEVER on FOX.

In Iran, the Internet was shut down on Friday for the coup d'etat.

In the U.S., the media is shut down since 2000 for the Christianist military-industrial coup d'etat.
