FSU announce program, personnel cutsThe Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State University will cut programs and personnel to deal with $56 million in funding reductions, according to a proposal released Friday.
Florida State's budget-reduction plan will be presented to the university's Board of Trustees on Wednesday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
"I think we need to point the finger of blame where it properly belongs, which is the Legislature," Florida business professor Jack Fiorito told the newspaper. "I'm not sure there's been enough faculty input in this process. But the administration was faced with tough decisions and I understand that."
Under the proposed plan, some programs at both the university's Tallahassee campus and its Panama City campus will be cut. Among the programs that are expected to be eliminated include apparel design, math education, science education and recreation and leisure management.
Two of the university's colleges, Communication and Information, will also be merged into one and an eliminated program, geology, will be merged into a new department with oceanography and meteorology.
"I don't really mind the merger, but I really hate we're going to lose some good people," Geology Department Chair Roy Odom said. "Some of these (cut) were our best teachers." ........(more)
