Brian Montopoli: It seems that some reporters, including yourself and CNN's Michael Ware, have really taken umbrage at John McCain's recent comments, essentially saying that there are a lot of neighborhoods where you can walk around relatively safely. Is it fair to say that that really sort of bothered reporters?

Allen Pizzey: Yes. It's disgraceful for a man seeking highest office, I think, to talk utter rubbish. And that is utter rubbish. It's electoral propaganda. It is simply not true. No one in his right mind who has been to Baghdad believes that story.

Now, McCain and some other senators were there on Sunday, and they claimed, "Oh, we walked around for a whole hour…and we drove in from the airport. Gosh, aren't we great, we drove in from the airport." Excuse me, Mr. McCain, you drove in in a large convoy of heavily armed vehicles. The last one had a sign on it saying "Keep back 100 yards. Deadly force authorized." Every single car that they approached or passed pulled over and stopped, because that's the way it is. When one of those security details goes by, every ordinary person gets the hell out of the way, in case they get shot.

If he did walk around that market, and I didn't see him do it, and he didn't announce he was going to do it, you can bet your life there were an awful lot of soldiers deployed to make sure that nobody came near that place. He's talking rubbish. And he should not get away with it.

14. NBC Nightly News reported on this last night

Add NBC to the list of organizations that chose to finally report the truth. During a report last night (not sure of the reporter), McCain's lie was revealed when the reporter mentioned that he was surrounded with hundreds of troops as several helicopters stood by flying overhead. My question is, why isn't his outright lie the LEAD story on the news?

I think that John McCain once upon a time may have had some decent instincts. He was an old fashioned conservative and that put him at odds with Bush and his neocons. He has supported some decent legislation i.e. campaign finance reform.

Over the past few years, however, he has embraced the Bush agenda and bowed and scraped to the same social conservatives he used to disdain. Well, these social conservatives may think the world is only 6000 years old but they know a phony when they see it. Bush,for his part, probably enjoys watching him twist and spin in the wind and laughs at the thought that the old fool thinks he got anything from him--either that or he has pictures of McCain naked with a billy goat.

It's a sad spectacle.

I say try because nobody believes this pathetic stunt. But its intent says alot about what kind of President he would be. He's more worried about what he imagines will hurt the morale of the Armed Forces than he is with using them responsibly and judiciously. And he's willing to lie to the public despite his reputation for so-called "straight talk." He's more concerned about imaginary things that matter to him than he is about the real lives of our troops and Iraqi's.

How could anyone trust this guy to level with the American people when he clearly thinks it's ok to lie to the public about a war? Haven't we had enough of that already?

But we have a certain responsibility to go out and tell people about things that are happening.

You can't get away not spending money by saying, "Oh, well, people don't want to know about anyway." Well, they may not want to know because they don't know. So maybe we ought to tell them. And that's probably the biggest problem of all.

We don't have enough people there – news budgets have been crunched, and so you spend your money where it needs to go. I've just come from Baghdad, which is a great, sucking black hole for money as far as newspapers and television stations are concerned. So it is an excuse, because you have to cover Iraq. Last year he said he owns a gun, but it turns out he doesn't.
