Dodd Asks: What if Your Child Were Gay?
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer
Wed Apr 4, 8:28 PM

CONCORD, N.H. - Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd told high school students Wednesday that people debating gay marriage should ask themselves just one question: What would you do if your child were gay? Dodd said anyone who would deny a gay child the right to be happy isn't being honest.

"We ought to be able to have these loving relationships," the Connecticut senator said.

Dodd, the father of 2-year-old and 5-year-old girls, said his daughters could grow up to be lesbians and that he hopes they would have the opportunity to enjoy marriage-like rights.

"They may grow up as a different sexual orientation than their parents," he said. "How would I want my child to be treated if they were of a different sexual orientation?"<snip>

4. What a nice way of putting it. Exception for Cheney, of course.
Even though he has a gay daughter, he still supports the protecting the sanctity of marriage bullshit.

Hey Dick, how about doing away with DIVORCE? That would protect marriage better than anything. But of course, you wouldn't have much support for it in Congress, what with so many Repugs having multiple divorces under their belts...

HYPOCRIT! :eyes:

work for marriage equality.

Some animals are still more equal than others in his world.

7. Unfortunately, many of the morans who support a gay marriage ban probably would
say either "There is no way any child of mine would EVER be gay." or "If my child were gay they would be dead to me."

I totally applaud his efforts, I really do. It's AWESOME that he said this. But it can be maddening trying to reason with idiotic people.

when he found out she was gay. He's a RW religious wacko nut job.

13. Look to the Cheneys for an answer to this question
anti-gay bigots. Their party says gay marrige is wrong, gays adopting or having kids is wrong, and even that homosexuality is an immoral choice.

But, in the same way that "my abortion is ok, but yours was immoral", when its their child who is gay, its suddenly ok.

Can't fault them for supporting their daughter, its literally the least they can do (considering Keyes disowned his daughter), but the hypocricy and double standard is sickening.

22. They don't know what compassion is
they say they're "compassionate conservatives" but they don't even know what "compassion" is - it means caring about bad circumstances *even if they don't personally effect you or your friends/family*.

26. I always say, the true assessment of a person is how they treat strangers
sure, conservatives are nice to people they know, people in their social circles, family, freinds, etc.

But how do they treat the waiter, for example?

18. I had a friend who told me,
her husband would not consider adoption because they might get a gay child. She was such a loving, compassionate woman until she married this man. It was so sad watching her change. The last time I spoke to her was 2004 before the election. She was a total bushbot. She believed * was a fine Christian man & all the crap that goes with that belief system. I finally stopped calling/responding to her.

"What would you do if your child were gay?"

I would love to ask her this question.

25. I really do like where he winds up but I have a problem with this
reasoning. Marriage equality should be supported because it is the right thing to do, not because its supporters think their own kids could benefit from it someday. Public policy is good or bad on its merits not based on who it might or might not benefit.

27. But he's humanzing the issue in order to make the rigid morAns
think about their position, and how it would impact their family directly...this is the best way to get people to think about the irrationality of their own prejudices.

30. The point is not that your kids might benefit.
It is asking parents to extend the love and compassion they feel for their children to all people.

It's similar to the idea of loving your neighbor as yourself, or putting yourself in someone else's shoes. "If I were in this person's place, would I like this to happen to me?" Similarly, "if my child were in this person's place, would I like this to happen to him or her?"

35. The only way it's going to happen is by putting a human face on it
When it stays a theoretical idea, it's very easy for people to oppose, or write off as unimportant.

Suddenly, when it's an issue affecting your loved ones, you see just how important it is.

Likewise, when you realize the world hasn't ended with CUs legal for 2 years in CT, and that couple down the street are actually very nice guys... the world looks different, issues look different, to people when they look at them through the lens of real people and real situations.

37. Our freaky-ass republican neighbors disowned their gay son ...
... and essentially refuse to acknowledge that he exists. He was married w/children when he came out, and they wonder - with their fucked up attitude -- why they are not allowed to see his kids.
