13. Sometimes people get fired for making a mistake, especially in the public eye.

I have little doubt that the writer who wrote the joke, and Letterman himself thought that they were joking about Bristol. Bristol is an adult, and arguable evidence that her political mother is out of touch. However, I do think that the writer and Letterman were talking about Palin's daughter who accompanied her to the baseball game, aka Willow. But instead of saying, "We screwed up, we though that the daughter who was at the game was Bristol, they said "I was talking about Bristol." There is a difference there. It's a mistake. And people sometimes get fired for making mistakes.

Now Letterman has to decide whether he wants to make a big deal out of firing a writer, and his bosses need to decide if they are going to fire him.

My guess is that he'll give a buttload of money to a home for wayward baseball groupies.
