recruiters in the schools
from and e-mail I got today:

Congratulations, Rolande Baker!!!

The April 2007 issue of NEATODAY (National Education Association monthly magazine) has an article entitled “Uncle Sam Wants…You?” telling of the wily ways of the military recruiters in gaining approval of high school teachers, as a foot in the door for them to meet their quotas.

While their tactics are successful in many cases, the article highlights Roland Bakers’ efforts at Sunnyside H.S. in curbing their excessive presence in her school district.

THANK YOU, Rolande!!!

The article can be accessed at:

1. Military recruiters should be on equal footing with other employers
They deserve neither more nor less access to students - One booth at the job fair, just like corporations and other government agencies.

2. They are aggressive and scary - speaking as a parent with one just out
of high school, one to graduate this May and one with a year to go - small town, not much employment or educational oportunities...a lot of my kids' friends have joined.

3. The military is aggressive and scary, so are some kids

That's reality.

Kids that find it too scary won't join, and they shouldn't. We need aggressive people in the military.

4. I think you misunderstand me - kids don't find them scary - in fact just the opposite

they find the gimmicks and giveaways and the implication that military activity equals some kind of video-gaming "reality" very attractive. I am the one that finds recruiters too aggressive and scary.

5. Once your kids turn 18 they have to make up their own minds
I'm sure your input to them will be valuable.

:hi:
