Sen. Pat Roberts says he’ll oppose any health care reform package that includes a public health insurance option to cover those who can’t get private insurance at an affordable cost.
“It won’t work. It hasn’t worked in other countries,” the Kansas Republican told reporters Monday.
While I'm honestly not sure what he means when he says "it won't work," I'm assuming Roberts' concern is this: The government will be able to provide health insurance to people so cheaply private companies won't be able to compete and will be forced to close their doors rather than just steamlining and becoming more competitive. To that I say, "Is the objective affordable health insurance or is the objective keeping Pat Roberts contributors in business?"
While I'm fine with saying "good riddance" to health insurance companies who can't lower costs to compete, I don't think that's really a serious concern. I don't believe private health insurance companies are all on the verge of bankruptcy right now- while I don't know for certain, I'm guessing all of them have some billions of dollars of fat they could trip away. Perhaps suffering through slightly smaller profit margins will just be too much for them to handle, or perhaps the culture of greed is just too strong to break- I'm sure Roberts knows better than I. But, still, I just don't buy that all of the private health insurance companies will all fold up and blow away if people have a public option, too. Nope, they'll all keep chugging a long, they'll just have to be content to gouge consumers a little most lightly.
