My kid shut her Rethug Science teacher down today
She's in 7th grade and he puts down anything to do with global warming. So today when he started on how Gore is all wrong and that we aren't going to broil, my daughter raised her hand and told him "No. We're going to drown first."
He just huffed and changed the subject.

That's my kid. Speakin truth to power at 13.

I believe the first thing I'd do is make a call to the school board.
Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 10:54 PM by AndyA
A science teacher going against all the experts and telling kids that it isn't happening is not doing their job. They should be showing Al Gore's film to the kids, discussing what can be done to solve the warming problem, etc.

Make a call and be sure to let other parents know this guy is not teaching their kids science, but is deceiving them.

Congrats on doing a great job raising your kid. We are going to need people like her in a few years, who think for themselves instead of believing everything they're told on the news. I know you must be very proud!

the points they must learn. so what is the 7th grade science curriculum? How did he vear from it and substitute his (the world is flat mentality)opinion for required rubrics?

37. The dichotomy of denying global warming on the basis of Creation
Theory is that the Bilbe predicts rising ocean, volcanos, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, etc., as part of what are now referred to as the End Times.

I can't see how they can have it both ways?

The objections have to do with the assertion that man is the cause of global warming.

If you live in a Repug area, it's hard to escape the brainwashing by Repug teachers, they are protected by administration.

Make sure that teacher doesn't "hold this against her" where her grades are concerned. You know the Repugs are spiteful!

:woohoo:

17. last year, when I lived in a house with four other guys, we had "painful movie" nights
one night we watched Waterworld, Battlefield Earth, Demolition Man, and Robot Jox.

I actually like Demolition Man, its rather good as far as cheesy movies go. But damn...

That night hurt.

No alcohol or other escapes allowed, either. Had to be stone cold sober.

That movie was INTENDED to be a cheesy movie, I mean, c'mon, you know the whole Taco Bell thing was a joke. The cars though, those were hilarious, especially the "safety feature" of using Styrofoam to save you from impact, I guess so you could suffocate within that shit.

19. It is both inspiring and disturbing.
Has she developed these opinions based on her own studies?

I tell my 12 year old that he is not allowed to have an opinion until he can defend it. He says Bush is terrible, so I ask him 'why?'. If he doesn't have a good argument, I trash it and tell him, 'you don't know enough to have an opinion... even if I agree with it.'.

He trusts me implicitly, and I believe this is one of the reasons why.

So does she understand the science, or is it a reflection of opinion?

Please understand, I ask this more for clinical purposes than out of criticism. After all, it's hard to criticize that which is essentially 'right'.

If all of our kids are like yours and are taught to think for themselves, then I have absolute faith that the future of humanity is assured.

Thank you for posting this.

22. I don't take your questions as criticism since you don't know me
She thinks for herself and makes up her own mind because I've spent her lifetime teaching her how to think, not what to think. I've taught her to do her research, go to the source if possible, before making up her mind. We don't agree on everything, but we discuss everything. She trusts me, but more importantly, she's learning to trust herself.

I'm actually grateful for the science teacher she has this year. They're young, but she & her classmates are learning a good lesson about marshalling their facts and pushing back against willful ignorance no matter where they encounter it. These kids will not be easily led with 1/2 truths and propaganda.

39. It's so refreshing.
I've seen so many children simply 'programmed' by their parents.

Once I was driving through a town in Western New York. At an intersection, standing alone in front of a building was a girl who could not have been quite 15. She was holding a sign that said, 'Planned Parenthood killed (some)million babies last year'.

So I stopped and saw that the building she was in front of had Planned Parenthood offices in it. I looked at her and asked, "And how many lives did they save?"

She gave me a funny look. I said, "You don't know, do you?".

She shook her head, I shook mine, I drove away.

I hope she learned something.

Now that my child thinks for himself (he's the same age as your daughter), I have to prepare him for the vast depths of stupidity in the world. I say, "Don't let this go to your head, but you're already a better thinker than half the adult population.

Thanks for being one of the good ones.
