MADISON, Wis. -- An apartment fire displaced eight West Side families on Sunday afternoon, but they're crediting a passerby for helping in the rescue.
The fire broke out at the Wexford Ridge Apartments on Flower Lane. Madison fire crews responded to the two-story, eight-unit building just before 2 p.m. on Sunday. They had the fire under control shortly after arriving on scene, officials said. Investigators said Monday that they believe a 5-year-old boy playing with a lighter caused the blaze. Firefighters said that several occupants were saved before their arrival.
"Prior to our arrival and prior to even police arrival, there was a person on one of the balconies of the apartment that had several children with him and was unable to get the children out the building through the interior of the building because the hallway was filled with smoke," said Lori Wirth, public information officer for the Madison Fire Department.
Logan Lundgren-Sky, 12, was one of those stuck on the balcony with his siblings and his father. "We went to the door, and what happened was we couldn't go out through the hallway, cause there was so much smoke, so we brought the two of them out on the balcony," said Lundgren-Sky.
Stan Robinson lives in the neighborhood and was walking by when he said he heard their cries for help. "I was coming up the sidewalk and I heard a bunch of kids screaming and a guy screaming, and my first instinct was to run up the hill," said Robinson. "I got up the hill and I told him calm down. He said they couldn't get out and he dropped the kids off to me."
