Say Gonzo goes down; How could the Senate approve Senator Hatch??
His co-workers know he's a slimey bushco snake. There would be a conflict of interest, because in seeking him nomination the WH once AGAIN is trying to subvert an investigation into itself. The dems would KNOW this.

Do you think he would be confirmed?

What we really need is a special prosecutor set up just like Fitz was. Start hauling these assholes in front of a GJ. Let the GJ decide. I say no immunity for anyone!! Especially anyone that gets up in the face of the Judiciary Committee.

1. The Senate usually does approve its own members.
On the theory, I suppose, that if they're good enough to be in the Senate, they're good enough to be anywhere.

7. I seriously doubt Shrub would ever nominate Hatch.
I know the media is talking aout that, but don't you realize he'd also be giving up a Senate seat? Right now, the Dems only control the Senate by one, and I can't believe Shrub would ever want to chance making it two!

9. Since he is from just about the
reddest state there shouldn't be any problem appointing another R but why would Hatch after a career in the Senate want to end it all working in a flailing administration? He couldn't be so dumb as to not know the ship is sinking, the rats are all leaving and it isn't time to jump abroad.

11. He would not give up a Republican seat.
The governor of Utah would appoint another Republican. Hatch might not want the job, however, because he would not serve very long and then what would he do?

10. Hatch would be confirmed, easily. He's a Senator and he personally knows the folks who would be
confirming him.

13. Senatorial Courtesy, is the name for the tradtition.
Granted the Frist era "nuke option" threatening last Senate broke all sorts of Senate traditions... I think that they would follow the pattern, but one has to wonder if the repub senators would do the same if say Senator Kennedy were nominated by a dem President to the AG positition.

17. He did say that....ok
I really think we need a special prosecutor. Someone from outside. Problem is who would appoint one? As Leahy said yesterday, the Justice Department is hopelessly conflicted.

outright lied about USA Lam:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rachel-maddow/an-open-letter-to-senator_b_45024.html

You don't call, you don't write...orrin hatch

I've just about exhausted myself trying to get someone in your office to call me back this week. Please apologize to your adorable receptionist on my behalf - the poor man now gets audibly exasperated as soon as I say "hello".

What I'd like to talk with you about is very simple: on NBC's Meet the Press this past Sunday, you said this about Carol Lam, the US Attorney for San Diego who was fired by the Justice Department in December:

"She was a former law professor, no prosecutorial experience, and the former campaign manager in Southern California for Clinton"

I checked the transcript against the video, and it's clear to me that you weren't misquoted.

Here's my question for you or your staff: what in the Lord's name are you talking about?

Here at Air America, we called John Emerson, who managed Clinton's California campaign in '92 and again in '96 to ask if Carol Lam had been the "campaign manager in Southern California for Clinton" - you might have thought we'd asked him if the sky was green.

First of all, uh, NO, she wasn't.

And second, Carol Lam was an Assistant US Attorney at the time of Clinton's campaigns, and she therefore couldn't have also been a campaign manager for any presidential candidate without violating the (ironically-named) Hatch Act, which restricts political activity by federal government employees.

Then we called a source close to Carol Lam in California, who expressed utter bewilderment at what old Orrin said on Meet the Press.

The source confirmed for us publicly-available documents about Lam's career which indicate that she is not a law professor, she's "been a federal prosecutor for nearly 18 years and never been a fundraiser for any president".

Senator Hatch, what's going on here?

Were you thinking of someone else? You seemed under the weather on Sunday -- did you maybe fall asleep and wake up in the middle of what you thought was a totally different interview - an interview about someone who DID work for Clinton's campaign?

Don't you want to apologize and set the record straight? Won't you be embarrassed if Meet the Press has to run a correction about something you said, that you won't retract?

Or do you have secret information that no one else has, that will back up your off-the-wall claims about Carol Lam?

on edit--Hatch finally responded to Ms Maddow, but not before the likes of rush et al disseminated the info as if it was the truth. :eyes:

19. Hatch is a total tool. I think that Leahy was just being a good politician
Probably thinking "You'll be confirmed over my dead body" but not coming right out and saying that. It was the right thing for Leahy to do.

I notice that Hatch didn't retract his statement about Lam being a law professor with no experience. In fact, it is hard to tell what he was retracting in that letter, he wasn't specific.
