PETA says that wheat gluten ISN'T the source of the pet food poisoning.
http://www.peta.org/feat-iams.asp

"Although the FDA continues to blame tainted wheat gluten for recent cat and dog illnesses and deaths, a mounting number of complaints about sick and dying animals who ate only dry food that did not contain wheat gluten strongly suggests that there is another source of contamination. Evidence from reputable laboratories indicates that an excessive amount of vitamin D in pet food may be to blame. Vitamin D overdoses produce symptoms similar to those seen in animals who recently got sick or died after consuming only dry foods. PETA is demanding that the FDA refocus its investigation to include other likely causes instead of pandering to the pet food industry and focusing on an ingredient that is found in only a moderate number of foods."

2. The government hasn't been impressive in the face of the poisonous pet food...
...but if there is evidence that they're wrong about the cause, they should adjust.

3. Royal Canin is being sued for excessive Vitamin D
in the food. I thought that was a separate issue.

4. Thanks, here is a link to an article on that.
I hadn't heard of this lawsuit before you mentioned it:

http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/royal-canin

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the pet food maker on behalf of dog and cat owners claiming that certain products contain excessive amounts of vitamin D and have caused their pets to become sick or die. The Canadian class action was filed in Ontario Superior Court and alleges the pet food maker either knew or should have known high levels of vitamin D were unsafe and could cause animals to develop increased levels of calcium in their blood, renal failure, and other conditions. The Canadian lawsuit is seeking compensation for people who bought Royal Canin dog or cat food since August 1, 2004.
