We Need A War Tax
We Need A War Tax
(posted with permission) from http://sane-ramblings.blogspot.com/2009/06/we-need-war-tax.html

In its race to bankruptcy, the U.S. spends staggering sums of money on weapons and war, thousands of dollars for every man, woman and child in America, yet there is no accountability. Just put it on the credit card and we'll worry about it later.

But "later" is fast approaching as the U.S. continues to occupy Iraq and is escalating the war the U.S. military sometimes calls Af-Pak. Why these wars are being fought, for how long or what President Obama hopes to achieve is any one's guess. He nor Congress is held accountable.

Is there a solution to this problem? Absolutely. Institute a war tax. If these wars are so important, we should pay for them now, each time Congress appropriates money for them. Every several months, you and I and everyone else could write a $1,000 check for ourselves and for each person in our families. For a family of five, $5,000!

When the U.S. taxpayer has to pay the mind numbing bill for these massive military fiascos there will be an unprecedented outcry and very quickly there will be peace. And the U.S. government will think long and hard before it declares any future wars.

Dick

2. The US taxpayer already knows that they are paying a staggering bill for the war
What we need to do is to simply get out. Take the troops out of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq and bring them home now.

Most people in the US are aware of the price that they're paying, it's the politicians who really don't seem to care. After all, they're not the ones who are paying in terms of lives lost and a country being slowly destroyed.

4. Thank you, MadHound....
"Take the troops out of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq and bring them home now."

Agreed. Although I'm not sure the people in the US realize just what a financial disaster these wars are.

6. No they don't. The war machine takes from the social security trustfund.

A WAR TAX on the paycheck will get the message across. The American people are STOOPID they need clear messages!

3. Yep, and that is exactly why cheney/bush/GOP did it the way they did
No taxes to pay for their war for profit and no views of flag-draped coffins coming into Dover resulted in LOTS of time for their corporate masters to reap massive profits while US troops and innocent Iraqis died. Not enough public outcry to stop them.

If the teabaggers had to PAY for the war they hawked, they would have been up in arms well before Obama took over.

7. Pick the industries which have profited the most from this war
and have them contribute accordingly.

8. But the goal is to stop the wars. How will that help?
Seems like they would just bill the US government more, to pay for the additional tax.

10. The People of America have never declared war on any nation.

Only our corporate controlled government has. Hit them where it hurts. If war becomes unprofitable, they won't wage it unless it is an absolute necessity.

13. Put in a 70% top marginal "war tax" surtax on income tax...
For those making over $3 million, etc. that as long as we are in a war situation, they will have to pay 70% on their income over $3 million. If we get back to a situation where we're not fighting any wars, then pull back the top marginal tax rate to something like 40-50%.

That would help us recover the middle class where we need it in this time where we're wasting money on war spending when we shouldn't, and that money is arguably going into most of these wealthy people's pockets through their ownership of firms like Halliburton, etc.

Make those that are benefiting from these wars with their stock portfolios PAY for their profiteering off of these events at the rest of our expense!

15. Better, wars can only be funded through a war tax.
Let them put their money where the blood is.
