A longtime CIA official chosen by President Obama to be the intelligence chief at the Department of Homeland Security withdrew from consideration yesterday after it became apparent that senators examining his nomination planned to scrutinize his role in the agency's interrogation of terrorism suspects.
Philip Mudd, a former deputy director at both the CIA's Office of Terrorism Analysis and the National Counterterrorism Center, was scheduled to appear next week before the Senate as the nominee for undersecretary of intelligence and analysis at Homeland Security.
"I know that this position will require the full cooperation with Congress and I believe that if I continue to move forward I will become a distraction to the president and his vital agenda," Mudd said in a statement.
Obama accepted Mudd's withdrawal "with sadness and regret," the White House said.
Now if there were only some practical method by which all the other Bushie-NeoCons that were allowed to remain or re-appointed, could be made to disappear. Obama has got to get his head squared up as to just what he is, and what he wants to do as president. At present we are seeing one Obama as a staunch supporter of Cheney's wars and worse the protector of Cheney and his tortures. Change the day and Obama comes on as some southern evangelical prophet and declares the world must be made to reflect some gods wishes. And within hours he will mount a platform and speak solemnly and convincingly about protecting the Constitution, turning government around from being a piggy-bank for the ultra- rich and greedy, provide adequate healthcare for all, build energy self sufficienf and efficiency that AMerica should be liberated from barbarians smelling of camels, and their western counterparts dressed up and looking like the little man on a monopoly game board. These personas are directly conflicting, he seriously risks becoming a failure on the level of Jimmy Carter as a president. One last observation, since the election the once fairly accessible candidate Obama has tightened the straight-jacket of a shrinking inner-circle of advisors and sycophants. None of this bodes well. The nation has not the luxory of the time necessary for the smart youth to become a wise man.
