I saw some things on Freerepublic about St Augistine -
and I got sick -

SO I had to do this - some of his best quotes - You know Augistine was a Plato person.

"Love the sinner and hate the sin " (Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum) (Opera Omnia, vol II. col. 962, letter 211.), literally "With love for mankind and hatred of sins " <5>
"Heart Speaks to heart" (Cor ad cor loquitur) <6>
"Nothing conquers except truth and the victory of truth is love" (Victoria veritatis est caritas}<7>
"To sing once is to pray twice" (Qui cantat, bis orat) literally "he who sings, prays twice" <8>
"Love, and do what you will" (Dilige et quod vis fac)(Sermon on 1 John 7, 8)

"Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet" (da mihi castitatem et continentiam, sed noli modo) (Conf., VIII. vii (17)) - (I think he was a pretty funny guy) -

Augustine took the view that the Biblical text should not be interpreted literally if it contradicts what we know from science and our God-given reason. In an important passage on his "The Literal Interpretation of Genesis" (early 5th century, AD) - I clipped it there - but you can go on -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustine_of_Hippo#Influential_quotations_from_Augustine.27s_writings

This had to be pointed out - how they could so possibly screw up the guys writtings is a mystery to me. I wonder what they came up with for Thomas Aquinos??

2. What were they saying about him on FR?

That topic seems a little above their intellectual grasp.

4. They were trying to make an argument using Augistine for
creationisim -

And you are right - certainly above their "pay grade".

It so pissed me off, you know??

Even the idea of trying to misuse a platoist thinker that way - and by some Fr out of Moscow no less - it was really upsetting to me.

Funny in a way - how one can take the original "big bang" theorist - 5th century - and so misqoute him like that.

I know why they tried to do that - cause Augistine is a central figure in not only the Catholic but all Calvinist christian thought ( so Lutherans and on ).

I agree with your point about intellect. But I am no less upset they would even try that - and not get called on it!!

6. Next question.
Why are you pissing yourself off by reading FR? I mean, I can kind of understand looking at it for entertainment value, but why bother to take any of it seriously? You pretty much know that anything they have to say is going to piss you off, so why bother?

7. Oh, I am not allowed to log on to FR - they kicked me
off big time - cause of the war - cause of what I said about the war and my kid.

I was checking something about St Augistine - I know I only really read seriously "Confessions"

But when I saw the FR address - I just had to look.

SO I saw the story - made me just mad enough to post.

I thought I understood him - a hell of a lot better than the person writting that crap on FR -

Not alot I grant you - but enough to get me to post about it for sure.

And I KNOW - there are many here who understand much better than I.

I guess I just couldn't hold that back.

And it really did piss me off.

Joe

3. Another...
"Without justice, what are governments if not big exercises in armed robbery."

City of God, Book 4, Ch. 4: Remota itaque iustitia quid sunt regna nisi magna latrocinia?

5. Good post- That is definately Augistine.
He was a character -

I didn't quote it - but one of the things he said I thought so striking - it did have to do with the concept of anti-christ. That we all have to look into ourselves - are we anit-christ?? He blew out Revelations in a sentence or two - and his point was so relevant. I don't remember where the quote is now - I think in "Confessions" - maybe??

I can't remember - guess I am too old - nice pick up though!!
