The republican playbook has always been to divide and conquer. That is the only way a party that has only 35% support can win. Winning on an issue has never been more critical to them than on the issue of health care. Bill Kristol expressed it nearly 16 years ago as the new Clinton Administration took on the perennial topic of health care when he said "If Democrats get health care for everyone, we will be the minority party forever." (my paraphrase) Democrats all want some form of universal health care but are divided on what the best form is. That is the opening that Republicans are hoping to exploit. If they can drive a wedge between just enough Dems maybe they can stop or at least soften the blow. They know that universal systems are very popular. Look at Social Security or Medicare. No politician in their right mind would try to kill them. So it will be if universal health care is achieved. Look at Canada or any other country that has universal health care. If a politician would even suggest that they would even try to end the health care system you would probably never find the little pieces that he would be torn into.
We need to unite on this now and stick with it. With Al Franken on board we should have at least enough Dems with a backbone to pass a universal health care bill.
