OpEd: Beware 'Lone Nut' Theory in Tiller's Murder
Beware 'Lone Nut' Theory in Tiller's Murder
Run Date: 06/02/09
By Frederick Clarkson
WeNews commentator

Dr. George Tiller's murder in church is part of this country's 30-year history of antiabortion bombings, arsons and assassinations. For that reason, Frederick Clarkson doubts the killer acted alone. But proving it may be difficult, if not impossible.

Editor's Note: The following is a commentary. The opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily the views of Women's eNews.

WOMENSENEWS)--It's been more than a decade since I've covered a murder of an abortion provider.

But I can't say I was surprised by the horrifying news of Dr. George Tiller's killing this past Sunday, on his way to church.

The threat has been ever present, sometimes quietly, sometimes dramatically. Abortion providers and abortion rights organizations remember well how Clayton Waagner spent nine months threatening to shoot clinic workers and mailing anthrax threats to hundreds of clinics and abortion rights organizations in 2001-2002.

Now, newsgathering on Tiller's murder is intense and there is much that can't be known about the circumstances.

6. Roeder, as a convicted felon, could not have purchased the gun legally
Someone supplied him with that gun to use in the assassination of Dr. Tiller.

23. I wish I could K&R individual comments.
Lone wolf my ass. Roeder had help. The feds need to hunt down every single member of the Army of God, and of Operation Rescue, charge them all with conspiracy to commit terrorism, and send them all to rot in a supermax.

28. And note they are calling the dark skinned Muslim convert
a "Terrorist" and the killer that assassinated Dr. Tiller a "Suspect"!

This is media.....allowing the right to define the conversation.

12. "Operation Rescue adviser helped Tiller suspect track doctor's court dates" - McClatchy
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 11:24 AM by NashVegas
By Laura Bauere and Judy L. Thomas | Kansas City Star

KANSAS CITY — When Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller stood trial in March on charges he violated state law in providing late-term abortions, the man now accused of killing him made a point of attending the hearings.

....
Roeder apparently kept track of the state prosecution against Tiller through a senior member of Operation Rescue, the anti-abortion organization.

At the time of Roeder’s arrest Sunday afternoon along Interstate 35 in Johnson County, a television station captured the vehicle on video. There on the dashboard was a note that read “Cheryl” and “Op Rescue” with a phone number.

Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue out of Wichita, said Tuesday that she has spoken to Roeder in the past, but she said he would initiate the contact. She said she hasn’t had any recent contact with him.

Sullenger served about two years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to bomb an abortion clinic in California in 1988. She has since renounced violent action.

16. Yes, you're right
America has a long history of "lone nut" killers.

Lee Harvey Oswald
Sirhan Sirhan
James Earl Ray
John Hinckley Jr.

All of them "crazy" - no further investigation needed.

for a long time. I'll take his word for it. He was on Amy's show today in the last segment:

27. The kind of person who murdered Dr. Tiller never "acts alone". They never have

an original idea. They are urged on by the words of the extremists, and the inaction of those who could put a stop to the insanity.
People don't kill people...guns kill people....is the same form of absurdity that would be demonstrated by saying that Dr. Tiller's murderer acted alone.
