Approach "kill peoples family members" increases recruiting. Approach, "treat people like the human beings they are" will reduce recruiting.

23. Asad was potentially a reformer and the US should have reached out long ago
Asad's father was a pretty brutal character, but when the younger Asad took over there were lots of signals that he was going to open and reform the system. Even after the invasion of Iraq, Seymour Hersh reported that Syria was trying really hard to help with the borders. Bush didn't want that. So he had US forces kill a bunch of Syrian border guards "by accident." End of cooperation. Syria became a transit route for arms and jihadis.

It's great that Nancy is reaching out and perhaps can salvage the US reputation in the ME.

All you have to do is look at pics of bush or condi or any of those other Repub schmucks with their phony smiles when they're visiting heads of state, who are also trying too hard to smile.

Just look at the difference in these Pelosi pics. It's the first thing I noticed, the genuine positive emotion that streams from their faces.

She's the kind, if invited to her home, you know you're going to have a great time. Wonderful sense of humor and the ability to make everyone she meets and speaks at any length with very special. 78. Wow, those photos are so powerful
They really hit me in a way I just can't quite articulate and make me cry to see an American leader who is ready to shrug off the divide and distance and get down to being human and forthright again. Particularly the one with Pelosi and a few women in a mosque, and then the photo of Nancy reaching toward a vendor. Such basic human gestures of togetherness.

Why is this so rare??????????

Way to go, Madam Speaker, you've pointed us the right way again. :patriot:

103. I notice Tom Lantos standing next to her...
he is a brilliant man, and is very keenly involved in and aware of Israeli diplomacy and politics, I'm glad she's seeking his counsel. They are of course very old friends, being from the same area of the country. He's getting quite old, I don't imagine he'll be around much longer, I love him, he's been a wonderful Congressman.

Thank you sooo very much, blogslut, for taking the time to post these.

Isn't the last pic ironic, in a way? She's in pants, and the prince and king are in traditonal long tunic "dress-like" apparel.

You know she is representing the US well on this trip. Remember that pic of Cheney walking with the king and looking really unhappy? He must have been on his way to the woodshed. Obviously not the case with our Nancy!

54. This is bittersweet
Seeing this makes me wonder what the world would look like today if, after that brief period of time after 9/11 when the world stood beside us, a real leader could have been in charge. We had an oppurtunity that comes along maybe once a generation, a new world could have been shaped, not just with respect to security issues, but across the board. All of it, shot to hell. Fuck you GWB, fuck you.
