A dispute that you hoped to use as the casus belli for your next war is negotiated between your closest (and only) ally and one of the countries you want to invade by the other country you want to invade? And all the while, that Democratic woman speaker from San Francisco is traveling the Middle East getting more diplomatic work done in a week than in six years of your screwball administration? I bet Cheney is biting the heads off bats in frustration right now.

Syria: We helped in Iran-Britain dispute
2 hours, 8 minutes ago
DAMASCUS, Syria - Syria played a key role in resolving the standoff over the 15 British sailors and marines held by Iran, two government officials said Wednesday.

"Syrian efforts and the Iranian willingness culminated with the release of the British sailors," said Information Minister Mohsen Bilal.

He said Syria had been asked "to help positively in the issue of British" crew members since their March 23 seizure by Iran in the Persian Gulf.

He did not elaborate.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem told reporters that "Syria exercised a sort of quiet diplomacy to solve this problem and encourage dialogue" between Britain and Iran.

Al-Moallem, who also did not give any details on the Syrian mediation, spoke at Damascus international airport before the departure of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) for Saudi Arabia.

7. I wonder if Speaker Pelosi's visit
had any thing to do with this, it is good news that the Brits will be released, but if Nancy did an end run around the BFEE on this it would be the cherry on top.

8. I'm really glad that the British sailors were released, but am I
the only one here that sees a similarity to the way the U.S. hostages were released by the Iranians in 1981. They waited until Reagan had been inaugurated and Carter was leaving Washington before they released them and Reagan got the bask in the limelight of them being released. I always assumed that they were showing their disdain for Carter with that act. Did they time the release of the British sailors with Speaker Pelosi's visit so it would not look like they were cooperating with Blair and Bush?

Should I put another layer of tin foil on my cap?
