Kelly O'Donnell just reportied on MSNBC that Leahy doesn't want to have SCOTUS hearings in September as does Sessions. Leahy pointed out how so much has been said about Sotomayor and she hasn't had the ability to answer the charges that have been made. The only opportunity for her to respond will be at the hearings. So they should be held sooner.
Nice work, Sen. Leahy. Make the dirty right wing tactics work for the nominee. Did Leahy take a page from Obama's playbook? Or maybe Leahy and Obama are cut from the same cloth of political savvy.
1. Go back to when Roberts and Alito were nominated.....

and the democrats were down to just 45 senators.
At the time it was Hatch running the show and he ramrodded those nominations thru as soon as possible.
I think it's foolish for the republicans to delay on this ESPECIALLY since the impact of the court will not be felt since Souter was pretty liberal and Sotomayer (we hope) is also liberal-leaning.
I could see the delay tactics if this was Scalia or Alito being replaced but if the republicans are smart they'll just let her be seated. No reason for them to alienate Hispanic voters any more than they have.
3. I keep thinking that they still want payback for Bork
It would never clean the slate for them as the right wing is too far gone to act decently. But they still haven't had their appetite sated for settling that old score.
4. Just the other day he was being pilloried around here
Sen. Leahy said something about holding the hearings on his own timetable and not Obama's. I wasn't too pleased myself. Maybe he heard from a many of us about what he said and he either had a change of heart or used today to clarify his intentions. Either way, things are looking up for the timing of the hearings.
