How great is it that the most stunning example of American conspicuous consumption will be owned by a Chinese company? All the current Hummer owners will be busy explaining that their model is pre-Chinese ownership.

6. The sale is only of the non-military assets, GM had a license from
AM General (original Hummer developer) to produce non-military civilian version Hummers.

12. How would China force us to start buying HUM-Vs from them instead of AM General?

So that we have to worry about running out of them should China cut us off?

Or are you worried that China will now have the same *car* that our soldiers use? I'm fairly certain we'd have happily sold them all they wanted anyway.

It's not like we're giving them advanced missile, nuclear or reconnaissance technology.

13. GM neither owns nor builds the military Hummer
GM builds some "Hummers" that look like the military Hummer but are built on a GM frame.

10. Thank you. I had been wondering about that (but was too lazy to search).

But we still have to worry about all of our soldiers dying of head colds when we go to war with China.

:)

What military implications? It's a light transport/recon vehicle... what specific advantage would the Hummer give the Chinese that they do not already posses?

17. ONly among the few Chinese business owners who exploit their less fortunate co-citizens.
They drive black buicks now that roll off the assembly line in China, cheaply built versions of the former American buicks.

5. I could care less. Those things have to be one of the
stupidest things ever.
But militarily, it couldn't possibly take the Chinese more than 15 minutes to come up with a better lumber wagon, or whatever that thing is supposed to be.
Oh, let me give you the secret highly classified military secrets that are contained in that thing:
duh.

here in the U.S.

I kinda understand why they kept the potential owner so hush hush.

Have you ever read the Bible? It too 6 days. God rested on the 7th.

Does any sane person actually believe that?

21. A little, but it's tempered by the knowledge that all of this directly hurts 1,000's of families.
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 03:45 PM by Forkboy
I always have mixed feelings when people lose jobs doing something I don't agree with. I hate Hummers and the attitude they represent, but I also hate seeing people lose work, which leads to a host of problems from losing an apartment or house, alcohol or drug abuse if unemployment stretches on too long, spousal abuse or child abuse, depression, suicide, etc.

Added to that, now we may see even way more Hummers on the face of the Earth now that China owns them than we would would have here, so whatever Schadenfreude I feel doesn't last long.
