So did you watch Conan's debut last night on Tonight? What did you think?
I enjoyed the show for the first time in years.
First, Conan's strong point is not the monologue it's sketch comedy. I think we will see much more of that than on Jay's show. I thought the first gag of Conan running cross country to get to his new studio in California was hilarious--only to find he left the keys behind.
8. frankly, I thought it sucked . . . he's not going to hold Leno's audience . . .
and better hope that the audience from his late show migrates to the earlier time slot . . . having Leno as his lead-in before the new five nights a week isn't going to help him either . . .
10. Leno's ratings TANKED in comparison to Johnny Carson's--his show was in real trouble.
Leno had a dark purple set and Marsalis (who refused to do jokes) leading the band initially--not enough humor and the whole program was lumpy and ponderous. Many people direly predicted the demise of the Tonight Show franchise.
But Leno "retooled." And he built a successful show. I think Conan is as capable of competing as anyone. He'll carve out his fan base, and that will be that. Letterman gets the New York guests, Conan will get more of the Hollywood guests.
