2. I agree. I'm sure that abortions are only one service of many that this physician provided.
It's flaming (whether intentional or not) to say "abortion provider" when that's only one aspect of the services provided.

4. is that why he was murdered though? For the "other services" he provided?
I know it and you know it. It wasn't.

10. Of course not. He was obviously murdered due to providing abortions. However,
I think flaming headlines like "Late-term abortion provider" only serve to prejudice people against the physician. I worry about the affects headlines like "late-term abortion provider" might have on anyone called to serve on the jury, if his murderer(s) go to trial. It could cause them to be more sympathetic towards his murderers, not him.

11. Yes but calling him just an OB/GYN would be inaccurate as well.
Your average OB/GYN doesn't perform late-term abortions.

28. It was his specialty. He said so on his website.
I posted an excerpt downthread. In fact, the title of his site was "Late Term Abortion Care."

I'm getting an impression that some here want to conceal the job he did. He wasn't just doing the job, he was also a vocal ADVOCATE for availability of this sort of care.

That's unfortunate, the number of people here who seem to be ashamed of an honest man doing an important, sad, distressing and very needed job, because it's the reason he died.

34. They're perpetuating the right-wing idea that abortion is somehow a shameful thing.....
He was quite proud of what he did and I'm sure was willing to die for it. Sadly, it turns out that that's what he did.

52. Precisely. And ironically, they're getting angry at anyone who dares to say "the word" for fear
that the right wing will hear, and point, or something.

It's pathetic. The man's life revolved around providing abortion services--difficult ones, too. He even posted statistics on his website (he had a great safety record). He didn't post statistics about how many pap smears he did, either. The entire website deals with "Late Term Abortion Care." Yet these angry posters want to pretend that he was just an OB/GYN, not one of the few doctors in the world who provided a vital service to women who came to him from all over the world.

It's pretty sick and unprogressive, this fear of the bullies on the right. The people who are shamed by the important and central work of this murdered doctor here astound me.

Statistics:

http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:wfaS_ayW3p0J:www.drtiller.com/fasum.html+late+term+abortion+care,+our+facilities,+george+tiller&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Here's the mini-bio from his site. It doesn't sound to me--or to anyone who can read-- like the man was touting his skill at doing pap smears. Also, if you look at his lectures, it is quite apparent what the focus of his practice was, no matter how much these minimizers here (for whatever reasons--shame, embarassment, fear--I have no idea) want to pretend otherwise:

53. The OP was being ironic.
There are people on this forum who are embarrassed to use the "A" word, and want to pretend that aspect of the doctor's life was somehow a sideline, when in fact he was a pioneer in developing a safe, late term procedure. This thread is a response to those people who want to insist the man was "just" an OB/GYN, and didn't perform hundreds of late-term procedures for women needing that sort of care who came to him from all over the world.

There's a whole thread of OUTRAGE over the term "abortion doctor" -- a term which I'm sure Tiller used himself and would have been proud of.

People who want to call him some PC-term are just continuing the right wing meme that abortion is somehow something that women should be ashamed of.

You so obviously don't read my post.

the right-wing abortion meme is one that puts shame around abortions and women who have them. People who somehow want "abortion" removed from Dr. Tiller's title are just perpetuating the RW meme that abortion is the boogeyman and something to be ashamed of.

Tiller took pride in his work....I'm sure he would have taken pride in the term "abortion provider" -- as many people who provide abortions do.

You need help.

42. Do you object to calling him an abortion provider? A title he called himself?
So many DUers do....

I'm just being attacked because I'm not a DLC shill.

46. no. obviously I don't. you saw my other post in this thread.
I think you're playing sick little games. And the reason people are taking issue with you has nothing to do with the DLC. It has to do with your shit stirring over a tragedy that people are upset about it.

47. And I'm saying that people are misdirecting their anger
they're getting angry at the MSM over nomenclature instead of getting angry at right-wing extremism.

54. And I am agreeing with you, FWIW. AND, I also think that some of the angry folks
have a problem with the word

ABORTION

.

It's almost as though they believe the word has the power to bring down the wrath of the right, or they're embarrassed, or ashamed, or something.

I have to hand it to this doctor. He was a brave guy on many levels. He did a difficult job and he was murdered for doing it.

He understood, too, that he was providing a vital service, one that most doctors didn't have the skill or fortitude to do--not only is the procedure a bit, well, to be blunt, grisly, but he was also dealing with highly distressed patients who were not seeking abortion as an ultimate outcome to their pregnancies. He was dealing with mostly married women who wanted kids, who were happily pregnant, but the whole business went horribly wrong and the foetus was malformed or nonviable. It takes a special person to do that kind of work, and do it safely, and compassionately.
