Cheney responds to news of Iran planning to release the 15 Britons

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/04/exclusive_chene.html

<snip>

Regarding the soon to be released British sailors, Cheney told ABC News Radio, "I don't know all the details, obviously, but I'm glad to know that the British sailors will be released," quickly adding that it was "unfortunate they were ever taken in the first place" and pointing out "there's considerable evidence that they were, in fact, in Iraqi territorial waters when this happened."

Cheney said he did not know if there was a 'quid-pro-quo' ensuring their release but said if there was such an exchange, it sets a bad precedent for the future.

"If you get into the business where you reward that kind of behavior, there will be more of that kind of behavior," Cheney said.

13. No doubt about it.. BushCo is pissed that this happened.
Iran made BushCo and Blair look like fools. Not that that's very difficult these days.

3. Anyone else notice how careful they are in saying "in Iraqi waters
when they were taken"? It's muddying the waters, IMO. They haven't refuted that they were in Iranian waters, just that they were not there when they were taken.

8. Like rewarding torture by allowing you and the rest of the thugs to get away with it?
Like shooting someone in the face and not getting the same treatment anyone else would have for it?

I could list pages and pages of examples.

10. What a dickweed
No one was killed ... everybody is happy .... and a diplomatic opening with a "hostile" country
was started. Kind of like what the Iraq Study Group said was needed to be done.

Cheney really needs to be thrown out and put on trial for his work in started this unneeded war in
Iraq.

16. Translations of Cheney's comments...
"I don't know all the details, obviously, but I'm glad to know that the British sailors will be released," <translation: Nancy Pelosi needs to be bitch-slapped>

"...there's considerable evidence that they were, in fact, in Iraqi territorial waters when this happened." <translation: Those dip-shit limey bastards never follow our instructions the way we tell them>

"If you get into the business where you reward that kind of behavior, there will be more of that kind of behavior," <translation: We plan to go ahead and bomb them back into the stone age anyway!>

"The president is the commander-in-chief," <translation: In fact, I personally am going to make sure Pelosi is on my next hunting trip>

"(Bush) he's the one that makes the decisions about the use of military force." <translation: George will do exactly what I tell him to do and we will begin bombing on April 6 at 00:40 hours!>

"They are trying to usurp the ability of the president to make those basic decisions," <translation: God dammit, this is a dictatorship and I am the one making the decisions.">

blah blah blah blah

17. The British Government...
... did what they thought was right, and the Government of Iran released the service personnel...

If there are any ramifications, or kudos for this action, * and Cheney need to shut the hell up about it.

19. Re: quid pro quo (Iran-Contra?)
I don't know enough about the 1979 hostage crisis (I was eleven at the time), but didn't incoming Reagan-Bush barter a deal with Iran for hostages? Was that tied into Iran-Contra?

Can anyone with more rings in their trunk fill in the details? And if indeed that was surreptitious quid pro quo, wouldn't that have done far more to establish a precedent than anything that just happened between Britain and Iran?
