Olives Recalled For Potential Botulism
Three Brands Subjected To Recall

POSTED: 6:21 pm EDT April 3, 2007

Federal authorities have recalled three brands of olives because of a potential risk for botulism.

The U.S . Food and Drug Administration has recalled Cerignola Olives, Nocellara Olives and Castelvetrano Olives because they might be contaminated with bacteria that can cause the fatal disease.

The FDA warned consumers who may have purchased the olives not to use the products -- even if the olives do not look or smell spoiled.

According to the FDA, the recall covers all sizes of cans, glass jars and pouches of Cerignola Olives, Nocerella Olives and Castelvetrano Olives containing codes beginning with the letter "G" followed by 3 or 4 digits under the brands: Borrelli, Bonta di Puglia, Cento, Corrado's, Dal Raccolto, Flora, Roland and Vantia.

Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning that can cause symptoms including general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation.

2. I highly recommend people read Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pollan
"In this groundbreaking book, one of America’s most fascinating, original, and elegant writers turns his own omnivorous mind to the seemingly straightforward question of what we should have for dinner. To find out, Pollan follows each of the food chains that sustain us—industrial food, organic or alternative food, and food we forage ourselves—from the source to a final meal, and in the process develops a definitive account of the American way of eating. His absorbing narrative takes us from Iowa cornfields to food-science laboratories, from feedlots and fast-food restaurants to organic farms and hunting grounds, always emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the handful of plant and animal species we depend on. Each time Pollan sits down to a meal, he deploys his unique blend of personal and investigative journalism to trace the origins of everything consumed, revealing what we unwittingly ingest and explaining how our taste for particular foods and flavors reflects our evolutionary inheritance."

3. BREAKING NEWS: "Run on olives that were previously re-called today...
Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 07:57 AM by originalpckelly
it seems they are being purchased because they contain botulism. A reminder for our viewers, botox is not the same as botulism...I'm now being told that botox is actually the toxin excreted by the botulism bacteria...oh God what did they put in my face????!!!!?????..."

"This is Ed the engineer, I'm going to be finishing the news while our anchorman cries in the corner."

4. It's getting to the point where you are almost afraid to eat!
You worry about the food you serve your pets.

We've heard about the spinach, peanut butter, and now olives.

What's next?

Since the Bush Administration cut funding for the FDA, and relaxed the labeling and inspection processes, these problems seem to be popping up more frequently now.

Obviously we can't depend on the big corporations to make sure the food we eat that they package and sell is safe.

Once again, Bush and the Republicans prove they don't give a Rat's ass about the public. Unless we can do something FOR THEM, like die in their war, we are of little use.

Why is it we are not impeaching Bush/Cheney again?

10. You'll be so skinny you won't have to open doors to enter, you can just
slide through the cracks!

Oh...wait a minute...that won't work. The Bush Administration is relaxing the air quality standards as well. Our air is going to be more toxic.

As my wicked Ex-Stepmonster used to say, "If you were born to be shot, you'll never be hung."

5. Everything I like, spinach, olives, lettuce for salads
what in the world should we do....go back to growing our own food. When my mother was a little girl, they used to take the vegetables pack them in straw in big old barrels. Dig a hole in the ground and pull out what they needed all winter long...Lets start doing that.

I like mine stirred or shaken, although shaking can lead to bruising.
