If you were going to die soon, would you want to know?
Edited on Thu May-28-09 02:54 PM by backtoblue
I've been thinking al ot about that lately and have come to the conclusion that no, I don't want to know if my death will come shortly. Given the fact that EVERYONE will die at some point, why are we so damned scared of death?

If everyone would accept that death is inevitable and is the ONLY thing that we are promised at birth, then I believe the world would be a more relaxed and less-stressed society.

On Note: Edited to remove information that did not convey my point accurately.

1. Nah, it would spoil the Stanley Cup for me.
I wouldn't waste one second watching hockey if I knew I was at death's door.

3. No - I'd rather go out like my grandad
He mowed the lawn, took a shower, sat on his bed to get dressed and died instantly of a massive stroke. He went out stark naked, clean and quickly. I can only wish I go in a similar manner.

10. Old joke - yeah, I'd like to go out like my grandpa, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like
the passengers in his car...

4. Torture isn't about death. It's about PAIN.
Do you honestly think a faithful and fervent follower of Islam fears death?
They're not real fans of pain, though--who is?

6. Your premise is wrong.
"If I am not afraid of death, then torture/interrogation is worthless."

Have you not ever experienced intense overwhelming pain? It is worse than
death. In fact, many who experience this level of pain during torture actually
welcome death as a respite to the pain.

If we all lived our lives as if it were our last then I don't believe it would matter. nt

25. Yea, if we all lived like it was our last day
The key there is "IF", but very few live each day like it is there last because, I have to have food for tomorrow since I might be here, I have to plan to take care of my kids since they might be here. Most people can not live each day like it is their last because they have to plan for a future.

I still wouldn't mind preparing, meditating, making sure I'd gotten rid of or given away all my stuff, etc.

12. Absolutely!
Day, hour, minute ~ that way I won't have my kid in the car, or even be in the car. I don't want to be in traffic where I might plow into people.

Not afraid of death. Been there, done that, burned the negatives.

13. Yes, I think so
To give me time to write long, sappy, guilt-inducing goodbye notes to my relatives and friends. (No, I really wouldn't DO that, but wouldn't it be fun?)

Dear furbabies, I've made arrangements for you to be taken care of when I'm gone. One of my closest friends who loves cats will take you and care for you like I have.

18. I think that's what life is supposed to be.
Living as though you only have a short time to get as much accomplished as possible. If we knew nothing else, we would know that death is imminent.

24. Everyone has a right to be told if such info is known.
Just as they have a right to request that they not be told and to have such a request honored.

Yes, death is inevitable. And as MASH notes regarding suicide, it brings on many changes. And most of us would like the knowledge that would allow us to plan for the effects those changes will have on others. And those who believe in an afterlife may want to plan for any effects they figure a looming death will have on their own after lives.
