Christie Whitman just said on MSNBC
Edited on Thu May-28-09 07:30 AM by PCIntern
that all the nuclear waste generated by power plants would 'only' fill one football field up to the height of the goalposts! That it wouldn't be the size of the State of Connecticut. (what a RELIEF)

ONLY! WTF...

Thats a whole lotta hot waste at Yucca Mountain (do the calculations) and she said it's more of a 'political problem' than a scientific problem.

My question: how much is she being paid to spew this stuff in this fashion? I'm not saying that nuclear isn't feasible, but ya gotta love this spin.

6. We have a Nuclear Plant 2 miles from us
I am scared everyday that something is going to happen there. I don't know why, but it really scares the bejesus out of me. Oh yeah and our power rates are not any lower than they were when we lived in a non-Nuclear area.

7. She also said the the nuclear waste was "politcal"
Scar actually asked her about the waste and she said it was a political issue. No, honey, it is a health issue.
By the way, I support nuclear energy, but the disposal issue is a problem that has to be solved.

9. She's right
Truth is, if one were to remove most of the "silly stuff" like gloves and wipes and tools and other stuff that is "barely" contaminated and burned it off, or other simple solutions, the quantity of "really bad stuff" would reduce to a whole lot less than that. And to some extent, if you reprocessed spent fuel, to make new fuel, you could get the amount reduced even more.

Of course there are some basic flaws in these assertions.

1) People making this case are basically advocating for more power plants, which will make all these quaint assertions false because now the volume of this stuff will rapidly increase.

2) There are "solutions" to many of these things, but they involved technologies that haven't actually been developed yet. The history of developing these kinds of technologies hasn't been good over they years.

3) That reprocessed fuel often has another name.... weapons grade.

4) The more we develop, the more other countries will want the same capability. You know, places like Pakistan, North Korea, Iran... Think of this, a nuclear powered Yemen, or Somalia.

Nuclear power is an attractive concept. On paper it can be very useful, especially if compared to things like coal. The problem is how to get from here to the "promise". So far our journey hasn't been pretty. Go to Hanover. Go to Chernobel. Try to think of the next "lesson" that will have to be learned. Then think "Bhopal" only on a nuclear scale.

She's a moron. She should visit the spent fuel rod storage area at a nuclear power plant.
