Sweden - nuclear event

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Area: Sweden, Kalmarsund, Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant, Oskarshamn

Cracks found in newly replaced control rods at Sweden's Oskarshamns nuclear facility has forced the reactor's second shutdown since December, officials say. The Oskarshamns-Tidningen newspaper reported Tuesday the cracks were found less than six months after the plant's old control rods were replaced because of similar cracking, the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra said. Swedish authorities are now reportedly uncertain if it is safe to restart the reactor before the problem is permanently solved. The Oskarshamns reactor was closed from October to December last year after the first cracks were found, TT said. Officials admit the cause of the cracking problem is unknown. "It can be thermal fatigue, faulty material, or something else," Oskarshamns nuclear plant spokesperson Anders Osterberg told the news agency. "Now it's important that we find the definitive cause. Without that, we can't eliminate the problem."

2. Seems like nobody's been hurt and trained experts caught the problem in time
and are going to fix it. Seems safe to me.

4. Finding problems before they happen

and fixing them before operations resume seems the very definition of safe to me. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of coal plants around the world pour out more toxins and poisons in a day than every nuclear plant except Chernobyl ever has in the entire history of the technology.

10. except Chernobyl
which is the point. It only takes one "event."

Oh, and don't forget 3 mile island. Just because the cover up was better doesn't mean it wasn't a major event and that many people didn't die from it.

11. Chernobyl was an accident waiting to happen.
A stupid design that was never really made to be a power generation facility and one that hasn't been built forever.

And nobody died from Three Mile Island. That's absurd.

13. And I guarantee
the filth belched out by the coal plants that power our lifestyles today have killed far more than were hurt by Chernobyl, and that's not even counting the number who are killed annually in the coal mining industry.

Childish fear of nuclear bogymen is one of the greatest factors in global warming and impending climate change.

15. Well, if they keep posting stories...
about how well nuclear safety systems work, then maybe more and more people will understand how safe nuclear power really is :hi:

8. United States - Automobile Event
On my way to get bagels this morning I noticed that the cars ahead of me were moving at a slower velocity than I was. This difference in relative speeds forced me, for the second time that trip, to activate the braking mechanisms in my car and bring it to a halt.

9. What's the "Event?"
Seems as if everything is working as intended to me. Problem was located. Reactor was shut down. No harm was done. Officials are looking to find the root of the problem.
