Mean? - check, Tone deaf? check, Out of touch? check
The GOP's Suicide Mission

by Mark McKinnon

Memo to my party: Blasting targets like Sonia Sotomayor and Colin Powell is a surefire strategy to guarantee our extinction.

If the GOP is ever to be resurgent, it has to pick its fights carefully. The tendency is, unfortunately, to shoot at everything that moves.

Here are a couple of fights we don’t need: Colin Powell and Sonia Sotomayor.

Let’s face it, Sotomayor is a political trifecta. Woman. Hispanic. Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from George H. W. Bush.

Yes, Mitch McConnell has to make his pro forma gestures about doing due diligence. And it is important to fully examine Judge Sotomayor’s judicial record. But, every day this confirmation battle gets unreasonably extended is a good day for Democrats and a bad day for Republicans.

Sotomayor is going to be confirmed. There is little doubt about it. So, going into weeks or months of paroxysms and hysterics about alleged “judicial activism” is just going to make the party look bitter, mean, tone deaf, and out of touch.

9. Great, just what we need, more thoughtless, brainless, empathetically challenged morans
coming into the "party of the people".

Sorry, I'm just pissed (in both senses of the phrase) and want to vent.

Peace :hi:

2. And yet,
they're going to go ahead and do all that. They have nothing else to do except obstruct.

They are quite like a bunch of beheaded chickens.

Am I a bad person for taking an inordinate amount of pleasure in this?

3. These are beheaded chickens coming home to roost.
The GOP has whored itself out to the Fundie extremists for so long, they can't break free of them even when they are no longer useful. The real argument has nothing to do with firefighters or "empathy". It is about what the Christian Jihadists call "family values"---i.e. keeping the world safe from abortion and gay marriage.
Some of the "good ol'boys", like borin' Orrin, actually got booed at the recent tea parties. They are now determined to show themselves "true" republicans and will, therefore, make gold-plated asses of themselves for several weeks over the nomination of this "liberal, activist, racist, sexist, yada, yada, yada----"

8. Kind of...

The utter breakdown of the GOP does deprive the country of reasoned political debate. But they've been relying on silly tricks so long, I don't think they know what reasoned debate is.

5. No, NO, NO!! Ideological purity must be maintained at all costs!
The American people DEMAND that Republicans stand up for America! Shoot everything that moves. Shoot everything that doesn't move. Shoot first. Shoot last. Keep shooting until the gun clicks. Then shoot some more. Keep kicking out everyone that doesn't keep perfect faith.

You'll hold your next national convention in a fucking phone booth.

I was going to say: "make the party look bitter, mean, tone deaf, and out of touch" how is this different from reality?

You people are so transparent - maybe even the same person - you are talking to each other

If you are truly interested it is easy enough to Google Judge Sotomayor's decisions. She is actual a centrist. She was following 2nd circuit president in the Ricci case -

The bottom line is that until the uber Republican right realizes they can no longer bamboozle people with sound bites the party will continue to have problems

It would be so much smarter to deal in facts and not underestimate the public and their ability to assimilate complex issues

The lack of depth of GWB forced the people of america to find their depth - being broke and at war are compelling reasons to search for facts and truth here on out

Judge Sotomayor will e confirmed. If the republican party wants to continue to be a party of old white men - keep it up

Personally I think this country needs a two party system - too bad the republican party is two party's all by itself -- schizophrenia is not an appealing quality for leadership

This is the WRONG fight to pick- they know they will lose so why alienate women and latinos in this?

senseless
dumb
leaderless

"The lack of depth of GWB forced the people of america to find their depth - being broke and at war are compelling reasons to search for facts and truth here on out." ---- Hard to improve on that!
