"God Bless America"

Look yonder comin', mercy me
Three wise men in a SUV
Corporate logo on the side
Air-conditioned quiet ride

That thing don't run on french fry grease
That thing don't run on love and peace
Takes gasoline make that thing go
Now bring your hands up nice and slow

-----

Take us to the land of milk and honey
Sing and dance all night long
Whatcha gonna do with all that money
Whatcha gonna do when that money's all gone

-----

Negotiation's just no fun
And it don't serve our interests none
Gonna turn up the heat till it comes to a boil
So we can go get that Arab oil

And we'll suck it all up through the barrel of a gun
Everyday's the end of days for some
Republicans don't cut and run
Tell me ain't you proud of what we've done

-----

Take us to the land of milk and honey
Sing and dance all night long
Whatcha gonna do with all that money
Whatcha gonna do when that money's all gone

-----

You keep talking that shit like I never heard
Hush, little President, don't say a word
When the rapture comes and the angels sing
God's gonna buy you a diamond ring

-----

Take us to the land of milk and honey
Sing and dance all night long
Whatcha gonna do with all that money
Whatcha gonna do when that money's all gone

4. James is Larry's son.
Stephen King called Can't Make It Here "the best protest song since Dylan's Masters of War."

From what I understand, Larry (the father) is an old-school left populist. He used to run a series of bookshops. James grew up in Austin, TX where he does most of his playing.

7. Sadly, he's taken down the link to freeware copy of the song since 2004 election.
Otherwise I would link to it. It's a song I think they should sing at the Walter Reed vigil. In fact, I will suggest it to the guys who do the Walter Reed vigil.

Although the visuals in the movie are a bit too on-the-nose for my taste.

3. Larry McMurtry wrote the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain.
The original short story was written by Annie Proulx.

Why, yes, I am a movie geek. Thanks for asking!

and you will not be disappointed.

Billy Joe Shaver shot a guy yesterday.

16. Useta really like Billy Joe
I thought his music got a little strange since the death of his son Eddy. Was it self defense or some bar deal?

and a friend of mine (and of my sons).

Some fool followed him out of a bar in Lorena.

23. Shot in the cheek!
Gives a whole new meaning to "turn the other cheek" I guess.

Is Billy Joe Shaver more of an "alt-country" musician?

25. I could go on for hours...
Billy Joe is the finest, coolest man I know (and I know a lot of pretty cool folks).

If you enjoy real rock and roll, blues, and/or country, find "Electric Shaver". Billy recorded it with his late son, Eddie (who died of a heroin overdose on New Years Eve a few years back), and it will knock your socks off. Nobody could play guitar like Eddie.

If I had an extra copy I would send it to you (I still do not know how to use all this crap that I bought to copy things).

15. This is why the RIAA wants to shut down internet radio.
I've heard this song, and many more like it, on some of the better college radio stations. Been listening for many years now. No commercials. Just good stuff.

You've given me the reminder to post some of the good ones when I remember them.

Great stuff.

21. The thing is, I'm religious... anyone who considers him or herself religious
Should oppose "God Bless America" and everything it represents.

There was a religious radical who went around plastering over
"God Bless America" bumper stickers with "End Flag Worship",
"God says no to war"

22. The original song / catchphrase, that is. Try "America the Beautiful" instead
When in a ballpark, sing "take me out to the ball game"
in the face of people singing "God bless America". When
challenged by the lily-white yahoos who seem to infest
the stands at MLB games these days, tell them you feel
"God Bless America" is neither Religious nor Honest,
and they shouldn't sing it either.
