Racist East Texas home of David Koresh cheats kid out of Gold medal
I want to file this as a :wtf: moment?
There are so many things wrong with this scenario--but obviously the powers-that-be in that twisted racist redneck fucktown didn't want this particular girl winning.

DETROIT — For 45 minutes, Detroit sprinter Kyetta Lewis celebrated her gold medal finish in the 100-meter dash in the Region III Track and Field Meet at Palestine High on May 16. But almost as quickly as she sprinted to a first-place finish, her gold was taken away following a controversial decision to re-run the race.

Following a long rain delay, it was announced that both the boys and girls 100-meter races were going to be re-run because of weather conditions when the races were originally run. According to Detroit track coach Dee Evans, neither she nor Lewis were notified of the re-run until just a few minutes before the re-run.

“If the weather had been that bad, then they should not have run the race in the first place,” said Evans, still fuming days later because of the re-run. “Kyetta had no time to get warmed up and, to make it worse, they (track officials) were telling me that a Dallas Gateway girl was going to be allowed to run again after she was disqualified in the first race.”

Dallas Gateway’s Taylor Johnson was in fact disqualified during the first race because of a false start, while Lewis clocked a 12.53 to win that race.

2. What happened on February 1, 1893:

New York Sun
2 February 1893

Paris, Texas, Feb. 1, 1893. — Henry Smith, the negro ravisher of 4-year-old Myrtle Vance, has expiated in part his awful crime by death at the stake. Ever since the perpetration of his awful crime this city and the entire surrounding country has been in a wild frenzy of excitement. When the news came last night that he had been captured at Hope, Ark., that he had been identified by B. B. Sturgeon, James T. Hicks, and many other of the Paris searching party, the city was wild with joy over the apprehension of the brute. Hundreds of people poured into the city from the adjoining country and the word passed from lip to lip that the punishment of the fiend should fit the crime—that death by fire was the penalty Smith should pay for the most atrocious murder and terrible outrage in Texas history. Curious and sympathizing alike, they came on train and wagons, on horse, and on foot to see if the frail mind of a man could think of a way to sufficiently punish the perpetrator of so terrible a crime. Whisky shops were closed, unruly mobs were dispersed, schools were dismissed by a proclamation from the mayor, and everything was done in a business-like manner...

Words to describe the awful torture inflicted upon Smith cannot be found. The Negro, for a long time after starting on the journey to Paris, did not realize his plight. At last when he was told that he must die by slow torture he begged for protection. His agony was awful. He pleaded and writhed in bodily and mental pain. Scarcely had the train reached Paris than this torture commenced. His clothes were torn off piecemeal and scattered in the crowd, people catching the shreds and putting them away as mementos. The child’s father, her brother, and two uncles then gathered about the Negro as he lay fastened to the torture platform and thrust hot irons into his quivering flesh. It was horrible—the man dying by slow torture in the midst of smoke from his own burning flesh. Every groan from the fiend, every contortion of his body was cheered by the thickly packed crowd of 10,000 persons. The mass of beings 600 yards in diameter, the scaffold being the center. After burning the feet and legs, the hot irons—plenty of fresh ones being at hand—were rolled up and down Smith’s stomach, back, and arms. Then the eyes were burned out and irons were thrust down his throat...

NEW IMPROVED Paris, Texas:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-paris_webfeb25,0,4203830.story

A noose inside Turner Industries in Paris, Texas. Racist graffiti, a hangman's noose and a Confederate flag have reportedly been displayed for months to intimidate black employees. Photo taken in January by Karl Mitchell, 41, an employee at the Turner Industries plant who has also filed a formal EEOC complaint alleging a pattern of discrimination at the plant. (Photo by Karl Mitchell / February 24, 2009)

... Paris first drew national scrutiny in 2007, the year after a 14-year-old African-American girl, Shaquanda Cotton, was sentenced by a local judge to up to 7 years in a youth prison for shoving a hall monitor at Paris High School. Three months earlier, the same judge had sentenced a 14-year-old white girl to probation for the more serious crime of arson....

Then last year, a 24-year-old African-American man, Brandon McClelland, was slain, allegedly at the hands of two white men who authorities charge dragged him beneath a pickup truck until his body was nearly dismembered.

3. NOTHING racist at all in what happened! A purely 'Texas' thang...
Texans are well known and well recorded in there efforts to load the dice fro athletes from Texas and I gair-own-dam-tee you they do it for ALL Texas athletes.

I tell you what is OFFENSIVE though, the re-emergence of calling anything that involves a person of color, a racist thing. Racism is alive and well in this country, but the purely racist acts have declined in my generation to a small fraction of what they were 50 years ago... it appears that the man elected as president of the USA is, afterall not known by all?

All strong 'ism' charges should be carefully used only in cases where they actually apply, because if they are not they will soon become merely trite epitaphs that no one pays any attention too...and that folks is where the real danger lay.

6. sorry the Detroit threw me....however nothing in the article
...gives me any indication of the 'race' of any of the contestants. Somethings missing here! A variation on my original comment about it being a 'Texas thang', it wouldn't be the first time Bubba that a little geetus under the table, or quid pro quo didn't happen in those parts. You have gunfights over Friday NIght Highschool football, Moms of cheerleaders try to hire hitmen to kill their daughters rivals for the cheerleading squad. We ain't sane pard! It all smells like a school 'fix' was in, and not a racial one.

1. The religious nuts simply got hold of the money.
2. Texas A&M's government superbug lab had a leak and the 'Stupid Virus' escaped.

I lean heavily to the 2d explanation.

10. In eight years as a sportswriter (in California), I saw quite a bit of crap like this
I've seen kids throw away the medals they'd just won in protest of meet officials' bullshit decisions. I personally complained to a track official when I saw a kid in a 1,600-meter race intentionally trip a runner in front of him. Nothing was done.

(A week later, the same kid who'd been tripped lost a shoe on the third lap of the 3,200-meter finals at the state championship meet. He not only finished the race, he passed two runners and finished fifth, though he was a favorite to win. Then he dropped to the ground in agony; the sole of his foot was shredded. Did they re-run that race? Of course not.)

Having lived in Palestine for three years, I'm sure you can point to litany of racism and racist acts, specific to that town, to better accommodate your positions, yes?

Or (and I find this much more likely) you're simply over-playing the significance of a particular act in order to better broad-brush an entire town.

Really-- I'm looking forward to read all the evidence you present.

25. You make no sense
Racism and racist acts do not exist in a vacuum. And while living in Palestine, you might have ventured out to talk to the Black folks in the community about THEIR views on racism--because when I lived there, they would have been very happy to share their experiences with you and enlighten you.
However, by the tone of your denial, I'm sure you didn't venture into "that part" of Palestine.

Your headline is misleading. Just because you didn't explicitly say the events were motivated by racism doesn't get you off the hook. You chose to place the story in a context of racism with no justification.

and you of course know it is a pdf so I will type it out for you:

"the Rev. Simon P.W. Drew declared that the "tale of wholesale killing of Negroes in Palestine, Texas must cause every American with any pride in its country or hope for its future to hang its head in shame".

Now, you go and talk to the Black community in Palestine and ask THEM if that town is racist or if these "tales" are true or not.
Look on a map. Palestine aint that far from Jasper and the mentality is very close to the same.

Wow. With evidence THAT specific and up-to-date, no wonder you're so convinced that Palestine is a "racist town."

Say, I found a handbill that says they're looking for fruit pickers in California. Says they pay good wages.

Oh, wait. The date on this handbill is 1935, making it 25 years more relevant than your source of facts, yet still
74 years old.
