1. Who does Newt represent
Who the fugg voted for him? They can't find one person in the Senate or House to speak for them.

And yes Durbin is light years ahead of Harry Reid, but how hard is that?

8. That seems to be rampant in the Old Boy Senate Club

There aren't many, if any, who actually are standing out for the people. Ted Kennedy would be my choice but he's not a candidate for obvious reasons.

10. being the TV face of the party is a small part of the job
if that were the most important aspect of the leadership jobs, then obviously Reid and Pelosi would not have any chance of holding those positions.

11. That's what Congress keeps telling
themselves - "video presence/charisma is a "small" part of the job". That was true in about 1955. But times have changed.

The party leaders need to have it all these days - they need to come from solid blue states so they won't be easily targeted for an upset (Daschle and possibly Reid), they need knowledge of parliamentary maneuvering and negotiating, they need to be willing to "whip" their own party members, they need steel backbones and they need to project strength, intelligence and conviction when on the teevee.

Not sure Durbin fulfills all of these - but he's far better, in all categories, than Reid.

12. they need to be able to compromise also
especially in the Senate. Suppose Reid showed the "spine" to refuse to compromise with the republicans. That would make it very easy for dems like Ben Nelson to defect, and easy for the GOP to block everything.

The first person to be looking to get rid of Reid would be Obama, he'd send Rahm to the Senate to find a new one.
