Something else to remember on May 25th. that Memorial Day should be May 30th
Not the Xth monday of May to create a three day weekend of fun and partying. In 1971 a somber remembrance of those who have given their lives was cheapened and has been continually cheapened to the point that it's original intention is now almost meaningless.

"Come on down to our big Memorial Day sale, we've got deals galore and fun for the whole family!" should be as insulting and unconscionable as, "Come on down to our big September 11th Day sale, we've got deals galore and fun for the whole family!"

1. If it makes you feel any better
I doubt that many have the funds to go on a shopping spree on the 25th.

2. In this era when fewer and fewer are inclined to serve
And thus fewer and fewer have relatives who served, the issue isn't to celebrate the contribution that servicemen and women have made but to have a barbeque and get snotty drunk. I predict that in the future, the name "Memorial Day" will morph into something that allows people to forget what it is that's being celebrated.

3. You're onto something
September 11th Fire Sale Day!!

Commemorating the day the world changed forever. Our hero, the unquestionable Dick 'Dark Lord' Cheney will be there in person to shake you up as he welcomes you to our bunker to watch, on video, with you, the two hours of attacks on America that made this sale day possible.

4. The Monday Holiday Bill was an energy saver in its day
Everyone should take some time to tend the graves. Evolution isn't necessarily cheapening. Decoration Day morphed.

I recommend a visit to a National Cemetery over this weekend-- when it's breezy all the little flags fly in the same direction.

You can't legislate respect.
