Surviving tough times: A shoutout to local electeds
My husband is an elected school committee member in our small town. This is simply a miserable time to be involved in local governance. The budget decreases monthly, the amount of state and federal aid is a rapidly decreasing mess and there is almost no public understanding or support. Teacher layoffs are rampant, programs are being cut and no one seems to care.

No one runs for public office in order to take a meat cleaver to fundamental programs like education. A lot of people are simply not re-running for office these days, there are a lot of folks who serve a term and are out. There is no reason for people to rerun as the job is often seen as not being worth the grief it causes or the time lost to family.

So, a shoutout to those brave and wonderful people out there who are serving as local electeds on town and city boards right now. You good people are my heroes.

So, what's it like in your town?
