More accusations of latino gangs trying to ethnically cleanse areas of African-Americans in SoCal

Nearly 90 members of a Southern California Latino street gang were arrested today for engaging in “systematic efforts to rid the community of African-Americans with a campaign of shootings and other attacks,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles.

Five indictments unsealed today charged 147 members and associates of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens street gang with 476 “overt acts” of racketeering that include murder, attempted murder, drug and weapons trafficking, extortion and witness intimidation. The main indictment said that members of the gang “have expressed a desire to rid the city of Hawaiian Gardens of all African-Americans and have engaged in a systematic effort to achieve that result by perpetrating crimes against African-Americans.” The city is reportedly 73% Latino and 4% black.

In a press conference, U.S. Attorney Thomas O’Brien said it was “the largest gang takedown in history.”

The investigation of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens gang began in 2005, after a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy was killed while attempting to arrest a gang member charged with shooting an African-American man.

In 2006, the Intelligence Report, published by the Southern Poverty Law Center, reported on Latino gangs’ efforts to carry out “ethnic cleansing” attacks on blacks that were meant to establish purely Latino neighborhoods. The story revealed that gang members were acting of orders from the Mexican Mafia gang. Members of the Avenues, a Latino gang, targeted blacks in Highland Park, an L.A. neighborhood. And last year, Los Angeles police launched a major investigation into another Latino street gang accused of targeting blacks.

I live in Lakewood, and we're bordered by Cerritos and Hawaiian Gardens... you'd never guess that there are multi-million dollar homes on the same street as the gang infested 'hood up road.

I had no idea what all the commotion was about re the helicopters over Hawaiian Gardens. There must have been twenty, including the BIG LACO Sheriff's Dept heli.

I pretty much grew up with vatos from VNWK back in the 70's. Near the intersection of Rosecrans and Norwalk Blvd the Sherrif's Gang Enforcement trailer was parked for over two years. It was a mobile HQ and was staffed 24/7. Didn't seem to help much. Sad thing is that in Norwalk, the same vatos are still at it.

Here's an interesting insight into the vatos from SE Los Angeles County. Once I started reading, it was like driving by a bad auto accident. You don't WANT to look, but you can't help yourself.

8. The population breakdown is complicated

At the 2005-2007 American Community Survey Estimates the city's population was 51.0% White (29.3% non-Hispanic White alone), 10.6% Black or African American, 1.0% American Indian and Alaska Native, 11.4% Asian, 0.3% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 28.6% from some other race and 2.8% from two or more races. 48.5% of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

But it is more complicated than that - apparently (from reading between the lines) "Hispanic" is more an ethnic than a racial term and "Hispanics" can be of various racial designation. That is why in the quote above, the "White" population is 51% but 29.3% is "White, "non-Hispanic" and the statistic of 48.5% "Hispanic or Latino of any race" can make sense.

That quote is from Wikipedia but their data source is the American Community Survey which has much more complete but harder to understand data.

you don't have to be intelligent to commit heinous acts - i am glad the police are working on this, regardless of hispanic or black or white - ethnic cleansing is not acceptable.
