Davis Cycling Pro Steve Larsen, 39, Dies

BEND, OR - Steve Larsen, a Davis native who became a multi-sport champion as an accomplished professional cyclist, triathlete and mountain biker, died Tuesday while running, according to published reports.

Larsen, 39, was just beginning his workout with a group of runners on a Bend, Ore. middle school track when he collapsed Tuesday evening, cycling Web site VeloNews reported Wednesday.

Larsen's brother Mike Larsen told VeloNews an autopsy conducted Wednesday ruled out a heart attack or blood clot and determined the cause of his brother's death may have been viral or related to allergies.

Larsen began began racing professionally in the late 1980s and was a member of the Motorola team when teammate Lance Armstrong won his first world title in 1993. Larsen transitioned to mountain biking where he enjoyed more success, winning the NORBA National Cross-Country title in 1997 and 2000.

In 2001, Larsen moved off the bike to try his hand as a triathlete, qualifying for his first Iron Triathlon and finishing ninth.
